'Chef' wants out of 'South Park' contract

NEW YORK, March 13 (UPI) -- Religious parody on "South Park" has led Isaac "Chef" Hayes to quit the Comedy Central cartoon.

Hayes, who has been with "South Park" since 1997, issued a statement Monday saying he has requested a release from the show because of recent episodes displaying "inappropriate ridicule of religious communities."

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry toward religious beliefs of others begins," Hayes said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

Hayes did not specify any episodes in particular, but a recent show called "Bloody Mary," which included the defiling a statue of the Virgin Mary drew fire from Roman Catholic groups.

"I think it was because he posted a thread from an inappropriate blog, but that's about all I know."

He was here since like 1999 - don't old timers usually get a warning or something?

OK, you know what, you really need to close your sarcasm tag!

Bah ... It's like this on every SP thread. All these South Park fans who claim to have the market cornered on funny but they can't take a joke.

Besides, I don't want the people who get on a SP thread for the sole purpose of bashing a show they don't watch to feel all alone and stupid.

I suspect Chef, the character, will be dying of an STD soon.

The only question is whether or not the parents will try and hide the truth from the kids on how he got it. Can the kids really handle the truth? ;)

"And sometimes they get another chance!"

I hope so. If for no other reason, as a first year Freeper I don't like to think about my membership being that fragile. There are other message boards but I don't have any other venue to talk to this many smart politically sensible people 24/7.

If Trey and Matt come to FR, I hope they read this:

The Plot: Chef buys some muffins (insert numerous 'muff jokes') made by Cartman's mom, who decorates them with some... err... odd bodily fluids. He gets something very rare from it, and dies in a touching finale scene, in which -- when Chef dies -- Kenny screams "They killed Chef!!!" and the rest of them yell "YOU BASTARDS!!!"

From the MTV story

"A spokesperson for Hayes confirmed to MTV News that the soul legend is a Scientologist but would not elaborate on whether or not the "Trapped in the Closet" episode had any impact on his decision to leave "South Park." Spokespeople for Comedy Central could not be reached for comment."

And from the Billboard article

"
As recently as last fall, when "South Park" was renewed by Comedy Central through 2008, Hayes had nothing but good things to say about the show. "I thought this would last maybe six weeks, I'd make a little easy money," he told Billboard.com in November. "Ten years later -- hello!""

Well put. Those are the posts I find most intriguing--the ones criticising a program/movie they never watch. If someone did that about The Passion, for example, they'd be the first ones down osmeone's throat, even though the story of The Passion is known to all.

South Park's fans like me use the oldest cliche around to describe it but it happens to be true--it really IS great satire. And those who immidiately dump on its rude humor are the ones who don't realize their mentality is what's most often being satirized.

He was in a thread that became about whether Americans who allow abortions are the same as Muslims who don't stand up against Islamofacists.

That is sad. If you are going to join in on a hot debate topic such as that, you should expect some wild posts.

Fart jokes aren't satire, even if it is grammar school children and bath towels doing the farting.

I don't think it should apply only to old-timers. We have a lot of jerks who are old-timers, and new FReepers who are highly intelligent and polite.

If it was due to a source of something he posted, why not just yank the thread with a warning?

Capricious bannings/suspensions like this are quite frustrating.
