The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.
"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.
In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.
The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

Yes, Walk the Line was probably my favorite movie this year.

It's funny, I vote with almost no exceptions a straight Republican ticket, (the only time in the past 3 cycles I've voted for a D was when the R was literally a felon who got on the ballot because nobody else filed), have worked on the staff of Republican campaignes, am going to a Christian Graduate School etc.
Yet, I seem to be beaten up here for being too 'left' most of the time, mostly for things like this.
Oh well. SOMEBODY has to try to talk sense into the crazies or they'll start turning off the non-involved conservative voter.

That one won't give a straight answer, so I'll fill in with the honest response: it is worse than that. The "detective" not only allows an innocent man to go to jail by suppressing evidence that would've exonerated him for politically correct reasons, he also takes a bribe, of sorts. The superior who pressures him to do this holds out the promise that the detective's brother, who'd been in trouble with the law, will have his record cleared if he goes along.
And this is done. Just gets better and better, doesn't it?
My friend who saw both CRASH and BROKEBACK, didn't like CRASH, either. She just saw that new film with 16 in the title...said it was terrific.
I watched it last night. He was good and the movie was great. I am glad Reese won for Actress.
Wait, you didn't say anything about racism, you said something about innocent men being punished for things they didn't do. You mentioned 'The Shawshank Redemption'. What's racism have to do with 'The Sawshank Redeption'?
Second, I missed the part where I agreed that anything was affirmed as being a good thing in 'Crash'. Because the kind of thing you are now describing I never said happened, and it didn't.
You'd know that if you'd actually seen the movie you feel so free to criticize.
Finally, if you didn't understand why it was a 'good thing' that Christ went through all that, you really, really, really didn't understand it.

It's about sorrow now, seeing that they didn't win. But they did break new ground for gay sheepherders.
I agree. I try to watch films and be unconsidering of the actor/actresses politics.
That is why I wish they would shut up....so it doesn't interfere with the experience.
It was either Paul Neuman or Brad Pitt who said...."people aren't interested in my politics"....I admire that.
Actually, it was Brad Pitt who said it...before he started talking about his opinions. LOL!
And for what it is worth, I think Jon Stewart did a really good job...
The entire point of that scene was the injustice being done to the white cop who was wrongly accused, and how it was being justified because he was though of as being a racist. The message was very clear that it was wrong. but that that's the kind of thing that can happen when people feel they need to "correct" wrong done to others because of racism.
I just don't see how you could get that impression of the movie if you actually watched the entire thing.

A good friend of mine also really liked Million Dollar Baby, so I might have to check it out!
King Kong was the only movie we paid money to see this past year. It comes out on DVD this month - and we're buying a copy of it as well (the only other DVDs we've bought have been the Lord of the Rings movies, Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. You're not alone gushing about King Kong. We do, however, plan to see Narnia. Everyone who has seen it has told us it is excellent.
