'Crash' Pulls Off Best-Picture Oscar

The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.

"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.

In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.

The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

Oswald didn't act alone. He did act alone in faking the moon landing. Oliver Stone said so.

I've already slobbered all about Kong. It's a wonderful film.

Crash had its problems, and did sort of crash (no pun intended) and burn in places. I felt the characters were compelling, especially Matt Dillon's, and the dialog was very good. The ending was a little abrupt.

STILL trying to win arguements with insults?

Facinating.

No, I never saw it.

Bowling for Columbine is a separate type of movie and separate type of issue.

Michael Moore engaged in what could best be referred to as "cut and paste journalism" or "cut and paste entertainment".

Oliver Stone, for all his faults, used a lot of historical fact (the Garrison investigation, etc) in the movie. You may have not liked what Stone arrived at. I didn't. I didn't believe it.

But with the use of a little artistic license, he showed his view of what happened. As I've said before, it's entertainment.

For the record, I haven't seen Crash. But I intend to, based on your dislike of it. The way you have carried yourself on this thread has convinced me that if you don't like it, it must be worth seeing.

"Jovial" indeed. You come off as a bitter old curmudgeon and your hate of Crash seems to be a function of your attitude, more than a fair assessment of the movie. I"ve seen pleny of other comments that directly contradict your assessment, yet nothing other than ad hominem attacks from you.

I asked about a plot point, which you confirmed was true. Having someone sent to jail for a crime they didn't commit is the sort of miscarriage of justice which good movies generally seek to unwind (a la Shawshank Redemption) rather than affirm. The fact that this movie doesn't do that, kind of takes it off my must see list.

Morgan Freeman, leftist.

You're wrong about that.

OK, just a coincidence he was at the Clinton Library on opening day with pal Barbara Streisand in the VIP tent?

That's just one of many examples, also plugged for Kerry at the DNC Convention.

Save your breath...they'll never give up the idea that it's the same people going to the movie over and over again. It's one of my pet peeves here on FR. Some people here confuse disagreeing with someone or something into minimizing that someone or something. Just because you don't like an actor's politics, doesn't make him a bad actor, etc. It's dopey.

I missed the part in the Passion of the Christ where what Christ goes through is affirmed as being a good thing because Christ was a racist.

Well THAT little comment sure is spot on ! I didn't watch, but had to see if Pervowood would have the nuts to have all the pervs win all the prizes. Looks like they backed down from a full confrontation with the real America. Hopefully, the lowest viewership ever. Any numbers in yet?

I think we just want them to shut up about politics and just act.

While Crash is the least offensive of the nominees, I found it to be extremely banal. The writer seemed to have just discovered racism and rushed out to tell everyone that it's bad, thinking he was the first to do so. Oh, and that we're all guilty of it.
