Through shadows to the edge of night

Not sure yet. I have to read up on how to do cukes...
I wasn't planning on doing them on the fence, but if I have that ready by then, maybe I'll do them and the beans there.

I don't know if they still do any cutting. If they do - take advantage of that. Some places ~used~ to. The wood things I'm talking about are the slats that have the same curves as the roofing. That you attach the roofing to. They'd be right together.

They do great, growing up a fence or trellis. So do cantaloupes, actually, but you have to support them...give 'em a bra of some sort, no kidding...or they'll slip off and break open. I stuck mine in knee high stockings and tied the stocking to the trellis. They grew inside the knee high.
You can also pad them real well with a bunch of hay underneath. Then when they fall, they land on the soft padding.
This year we're going to build the jedis a tee-pee out there and grow beans up it. Matthew wants to grow potatoes so he can make tater chips. LOL! That's one of the only things he'll eat out of the garden. Tater chips and chives.

Last year I made trellises for my cucumbers and tomatoes from pvc pipe and plastic chicken wire. The cucumbers work well that way because they have such a tendency to spread out when they're flat on the ground.

I like the Straight Eight cukes...they're not as apt to turn bitter.
If you have room, you can just grow them in hills and let 'em spread out.

For once "nice melons" really means *melons*...

That'll work too...just let 'em sprawl. That was how my grandmother did it. I've heard that putting them up on a trellis cuts down on mildew and such...but you could stuff hay under them too to promote drainage...let them grow up a pile of hay.
I use hay a LOT in the garden. I mulch everything with it, because our soil erodes so bad...it's so sandy. The hay helps keep the soil from washing away when I water.
