This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
There was no agility to speak of then, I got into it a bit with my Dal-brador Gidget but then I spent a summer with all my spare time fencing this place for the horse, and never got back into it. She's done nothing but gain weight since. Heh... so have I.
Their pictures are on my profile page :~) I look forward to taking a look at yours, gonna go check out your page now :~)
Your dogs are all just lovely. Especially the Irish... they're so fancy. :~)
What's the deal with Irish Setters with white patches on them? Were marked sortof like Springer. I saw one, and thought it must be a mix, but she swore it was purebred. This woman had two and was breeding ~for~ it. Is this a new variety/fad?
Irish Setters with white patches?! Horrors! I've never heard of them either. As far as I knew, it was acceptable to have a small white patch on the chest or something like that, but not large white patches like a Springer. I'll have to ask my sister, since BladeRider is already gone.
I'm sorry about your wrist - follow the doctor's orders so hopefully it will heal without surgery.
The Assn has a badly designed web page here: Irish Red & White Setter Association
Labs have some recessive white chest patches too... the blacks and chocolates can't show with any white, but the yellows are permitted a small star on the chest, and probably not judged well for it.
Wow, they don't look anything like the Irish Setters that I'm used to. They look more like field dogs. Of course field Irish don't look anything like show Irish either.
I'm going to call my trainer to schedule some time with her, does that count? :-D With health issues that I've been having, riding just hasn't been top on my priority list.
Well, I'm outta here for the weekend. Y'all have a good one!
I have a few minutes before I leave. Such a busy day. Remember that dog I decided was mine that I couldn't catch? Well I found her today. Splattered all over the highway. The pound tried to find her yesterday too but..... Damn dog. Made me cry.
Oh dang.... so sorry CindyDawg...
I'm on my first dog, a little Chocolate Lab, and having a ball. She's not conformation -- in fact a distant cousin of mine is an AKC judge, we were at a family reunion - with dog - and I asked her as a favor to watch her trot out. When she quit laughing, she said "Don't bother, she'll never go anywhere" (she's undersized and too skinny and leggy for a conformation dog.)
You're right that agility is time consuming, it's a lot of fun though. She's 1 Q short of her AX and AXJ titles in AKC, and has her Agility Dog and Advanced Jumpers titles in USDAA. She's also got her UKC Started retriever title and working on her Seasoned and her AKC Junior Hunter.
We have an Irish Setter in our agility club, he's a really nice dog but a little too big for the equipment and not the most obedient dog on earth . . .
You all need to see these videos off of Tim Woolley's horse racing site. They are fantastic!!

That makes me want to cry. I'm so, so sorry. How heartbreaking.
We made the decision to put our 15 year old Blue Point Siamese boy to sleep today. He had terminal cancer which had spread to his lungs. We couldn't wait til the weekend because although he wasn't in pain it was clearly just a struggle to breathe.
My kids were a real support (even my thinks-he's-a-tough-guy 15 year old son) and went to the vet with me. The vet is an old friend and we all cried . . . he struggled against the initial sedative for just about 30 seconds, I think it started to depress his breathing even more and he panicked a little. We held him and patted him and he calmed down - then it was over really quickly.
We brought him home and built him a beautiful coffin out of birch veneer plywood - put a catnip mouse and a St. Francis holy card in with him, and tucked him under his own rhododendron bush.
Rest in peace, Finn MacCoul, you were a really cool cat.
It can be hard, when they struggle a bit, Zulu did too. I am glad you had the comfort of your family and a great old friend. I hope you have peace.
Cat Poem
They will not go quietly,
the cats who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a meow at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them. . . and always will.
- Linda Barnes
I'm sorry. That must be so hard for you.
from Jubilate Agno [Rejoice in the Lamb]
For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry.
For he is the servant of the Living God duly and daily serving him.
For at the first glance of the glory of God in the East he worships in his way.
For this is done by wreathing his body seven times round with elegant quickness.
For then he leaps up to catch the musk, which is the blessing of God upon his prayer.
For he rolls upon prank to work it in.
For having done duty and received blessing he begins to consider himself.
For this he performs in ten degrees.
For first he looks upon his forepaws to see if they are clean.
For secondly he kicks up behind to clear away there.
For thirdly he works it upon stretch with the forepaws extended.
For fourthly he sharpens his paws by wood.
For fifthly he washes himself.
For sixthly he rolls upon wash.
For seventhly he fleas himself, that he may not be interrupted upon the beat.
For eighthly he rubs himself against a post.
For ninthly he looks up for his instructions.
For tenthly he goes in quest of food.
For having consider'd God and himself he will consider his neighbour.
For if he meets another cat he will kiss her in kindness.
For when he takes his prey he plays with it to give it a chance.
For one mouse in seven escapes by his dallying.
For when his day's work is done his business more properly begins.
For he keeps the Lord's watch in the night against the adversary.
For he counteracts the powers of darkness by his electrical skin and glaring eyes.
For he counteracts the Devil, who is death, by brisking about the life.
For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him.
For he is of the tribe of Tiger.
For the Cherub Cat is a term of the Angel Tiger.
For he has the subtlety and hissing of a serpent, which in goodness he suppresses.
For he will not do destruction, if he is well-fed, neither will he spit without provocation.
For he purrs in thankfulness, when God tells him he's a good Cat.
For he is an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon.
For every house is incomplete without him and a blessing is lacking in the spirit.
For the Lord commanded Moses concerning the cats at the departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt.
For every family had one cat at least in the bag.
For the English Cats are the best in Europe.
For he is the cleanest in the use of his forepaws of any quadruped.
For the dexterity of his defence is an instance of the love of God to him exceedingly.
For he is the quickest to his mark of any creature.
For he is tenacious of his point.
For he is a mixture of gravity and waggery.
For he knows that God is his Saviour.
For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest.
For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion.
For he is of the Lord's poor and so indeed is he called by benevolence perpetually -- Poor Jeoffry! poor Jeoffry! the rat has bit thy throat.
For I bless the name of the Lord Jesus that Jeoffry is better.
For the divine spirit comes about his body to sustain it in complete cat.
For his tongue is exceeding pure so that it has in purity what it wants in music.
For he is docile and can learn certain things.
For he can set up with gravity which is patience upon approbation.
For he can fetch and carry, which is patience in employment.
For he can jump over a stick which is patience upon proof positive.
For he can spraggle upon waggle at the word of command.
For he can jump from an eminence into his master's bosom.
For he can catch the cork and toss it again.
For he is hated by the hypocrite and miser.
For the former is afraid of detection.
For the latter refuses the charge.
For he camels his back to bear the first notion of business.
For he is good to think on, if a man would express himself neatly.
For he made a great figure in Egypt for his signal services.
For he killed the Ichneumon-rat very pernicious by land.
For his ears are so acute that they sting again.
For from this proceeds the passing quickness of his attention.
For by stroking of him I have found out electricity.
For I perceived God's light about him both wax and fire.
For the Electrical fire is the spiritual substance, which God sends from heaven to sustain the bodies both of man and beast.
For God has blessed him in the variety of his movements.
For, tho' he cannot fly, he is an excellent clamberer.
For his motions upon the face of the earth are more than any other quadruped.
For he can tread to all the measures upon the music.
For he can swim for life.
For he can creep.
-- Christopher Smart
(Kit Smart was confined in a madhouse when he wrote this poem -- but I think there was a good deal of sense in his madness, and much of poetry. Benjamin Britten has set this to music here.)
I'm sorry too, for you, about the dog... it's hard to know what to say, sometimes you want to help, and they won't let you. You tried, and I'm sorry for the way it ended.
