This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

She's not going anywhere this weekend but she's going to the Weimeraner National next week to observe and judging a show in New Orleans the weekend after that. I don't think she really shows anymore. You've really got to be able to move out to keep up with an Irish and she just can't do that. Her balance problem is related to the accident too. She and her husband got t-boned by another car, right in my sister's door and she got a head injury to the right side of her brain, which affected the left side of her body, as well as her short-term memory. Her memory is back to fairly normal, but the left leg control is still not good. Her personality changed quite a bit too.
Hello,
Well I went to the doctor this morning, my wrist had me up all night.
I have a bone chip, H said give it a week of doing nothing and it should start to heal. He put a splint on it. If that doesn't work it may need surgery.
It probaby started as a hairline fracture, but yesterday I reinjured it yesterday I know when, stretching Harley, Thats why it flaired up so.
typing 1 handed, sorry for the errors.
Becky
Yep, been showing them since 1977 and Lakeland Terriers since 1991. SOmetimes it get tough deciding on trail riding or dog shows so I try to balance both.
Aw MAN! Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully the splint will fix you up and it won't need surgery. But you gotta bahave yourself and don't cheat. Don't do more than you know you should. It'll be hard on you I know coz you don't like to just sit around and do nothing, but I sure would hate for this to mess up your next ride. When is it by the way?
What kinda dogs did you used to show?
Boy, that's rough... I pray she's making the best she can of it.
Well, as frog said, behave yourself... Take it easy, and hope you don't need surgery. I want you to be feeling good for your trip up here!
I am showing. Taking 3 of my own dogs and will be showing 4 dogs for others, helps pay for my trip. We are going to tour on Monday, probably Mackinaw Island, Tuesday we will groom during the day and attend a health seminar at night. Wednesday starts judging that lasts through Saturday then Sunday I will head home. Going to be a looooong drive to do myself on Sunday after such a long weekend. 15 hours! Next year we will be in Tampa, FL and the following year somewhere in AZ.
well i'm lucky there, it's not till sept, so i have plenty of time. i'm going to take up residence on the couch for the next week. i want this to heal, so i will be good.
becky
me too.

Heh, make BigMac wait on you hand and foot. You got a good excuse now. ;o)
I showed my Labrador Logan. He was a pretty cuss :~D
I showed him a little in conformation, but found I didn't really know anyone to help me learn the ropes, and I was treated rather coldly by the others on the conformation side so I didn't meet any friends either and quit that. :~D
I have a friend who tried her hand at showing collies, I think she had a similar experience!
I did show Logan in obedience up through CDX... I had to quit that too instead of going on to Utility, he was a hard headed dog, and it took us awhile... By middle age, he was hurting himself over the jumps, they're so high, and Lab is a heavy dog to be jumping 1.5X his height... a little better on grass at outdoor shows, but most shows here are indoors on concrete. So he retired from that. It was a fun time.
You'll enjoy that. I've never been there, but my MIL had a rich aunt who used to own a B&B up there and she and my husband have been up to visit her, back before we married. The aunt is long since dead and the house sold, but they still fondly remember the place. There are no cars allowed on the island, only bicycles and there are horse-drawn carriages for hire to get around. I guess they use draft horses for the heavy stuff. I always thought that was kinda cool.
That unfortunatly is the case in a lot of breeds where there is a lot of competition. Labs, Dobes, Rotties, Terriers, Cockers, most of the Irish Setter people are very nice and helpful to newbies. Lakeland people were pretty nice at first until I started becoming competition. I started in obedience, also put a CDX on my first Irish, she was trained through Utility but back then she had to jump 48" even though she was just a 24" dog and she kept clipping the jumps so I retired her. I have gotten agility titles on one of my Irish and one of my Lakelands, that is fun but soooo time consuming. Just keeping everyone groomed takes up a lot time.
I was there back in 1991 I think and toured the Island then as well as the Bear.....Dunes. It is very pretty. What I remember most is it does not get dark until 10:00 and we got to see the Northern Lights one night.
Yeah, that would be cool, in the summertime, but I don't think I could handle the flip side in the winter when it gets dark at 4. I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights. Every once in a blue moon we might see a glimmer of them down this far south, but all it amounts to is a red or green glow on the horizon. I want to see the REALLY intense ones that look like flowing curtains sometime.
I will try to get pictures if we see them this year. It was pretty neat. I/ve never been that far north in the winter so don't know how early it gets dark.
Well all I am outta here for the week! Ya'll have a great week and be safe.
Have a safe trip and have fun!
