This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Good decision:)
Becky
OK, I know nothing about propagation either. Will I need to do anything other then just plant them?????
Becky
Not really, just stick them in the ground... the propogation issue was just wondering if or how they'll multiply.
Whoaaaa, how cool.
Becky
Hey :')
I like that
Lol I bet you did have fun with those two dogs. Mom has alot of doctors lined up working on her knee. Glad you are back.
I'm downloading pics
I got both of them split like this:
The halves have these little curled new shoots inside, so now was exactly the right time to do this.
Now they're sitting in water, Half of each in each little bucket while I try to figure out the next step. What about wrapping them in damp rags and putting them in a big freezer bag?
You're right, I think you picked the perfect time to dig them up and seperate them. When I get bare root plants from catalogs, the roots are generally wrapped with paper and a little shavings or plastic. I think just soaking them good and then wrapping in paper or something would work. I'm not sure if they could spend a long time completely sealed up or if they would start to mold. (Can you tell I am not a gardener?)
Well, we've got shavings... A little bit wet?
Yes, damp. It seems to work with the ones that come to me. I think they need enough moisture so the roots don't dry out completely but enough air so it doesn't mold. Someone here (I can't remember who) is a gardener enough to tell us.
OK - so shavings, wrap them in something like newsprint, and no plastic? I'll also find a shipping option that's not too long in the box.
When my step-son moved out here from NC, he put his snakes in Army laundry bags, tied the tops shut, put the bags in a styrafoam cooler with towels, put the cooler in a box and sent it FedEx to me :). Snakes got here fine. 4ft and 5ft boas. He told FedEx the package was fragile.
Egads!
Thanks for your help. If I can get these shipped and they work out, I'll dig up another one for you to try :~D.
Thank you :)
On second thought - I'm gonna go dig one up now - I just won't split it. That'll be a good test too. I split them all the time when I move them, but I never rinse the dirt off, and I don't keep them out of the ground long.
I wish it wasn't Friday, 'cuz they'll sit around a day on Sunday no matter what. Since it's too late today to get them packaged and off to the UPS place, I think I'll soak them in the water like they are tonight, and package and ship them tomorrow. I ~think~ the UPS store will be open tomorrow.
We didn't leave my Dad's (near Houston) until about 5pm. My Dad drove awhile and then I took over. About midnight I got really tired and he told me to pull over at a rest stop. I climbed in the back and he went to sleep in the reclining seat. We were settled down for the night. Wrong. Just about the time I drifted off he was on the road again. I knew he had to be tired too so I tried to stay awake to keep him company. After about an hour he pulled over again. Same thing. Just when I thought he was going to sleep, after a cat nap he was moving again. After three times of this I gave the bed up and climbed back in the front seat. We got to Phoenix early evening Thur. We were so tired I just ordered delivery. A pic to follow.
