The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

... just hate changing reins. I like the feel of knowing mine. That sounds weird but do you understand?...

Perfectly. When I ride somebody else's horse and use their bridle, I always use my reins for that very reason. But I will change if I get a new bridle, just so it'll look right. I'm adapting to the biothane ones on the new halter/bridle that I bought for Grace and it sure is different. It's heavier than the bare nylon I'm used to.

Wow, what a scare! Inner ear trouble? I'd have thought it related to the earlier procedure too. I hope he soon recovers from that. Is this totally out of the blue?

I know about treats but I'm working on an exercise that requires a treat and I don't want to give her anything to chew with a bit in. A long time ago I gave a bite of my apple to my gelding. I thought I was going to have to go in and get it out.. It scared me so bad that I don't care how good they chew, no grass no nothing with bits in. I bought some molasses yesterday I thought maybe just a tad to lick until I can get a combo.

You're confusing things... that combo bridle IS to be used with a bit in the mouth. The feature is the bit can be unsnapped and taken out if you are going to tie them out on a trail break, and you don't have to carry a halter separate.

If you want a 'bitless' bridle, nothing in their mouth, you need a hackamore, like ecurbh and I are using. And you wouldn't want to use that with a halter on too.

Totally. He had been having trouble with some sudden hearing loss in one ear about a month or so ago and had a head CT for that but there was no tumor or anything that would explain it so he'd gone on with his business. The dizziness may have been related to that. But I don't know.

They gave him 2 shots of Valium, some Phenergan and a prescription of Antivert on Saturday and his wife said he felt much better on Sunday, so hopefully he'll be over it real soon.

I think she was wanting the combo bridle so she could use it with the bit then take it out for the treat. I think.

Well, it's always possible I'm the one that's confused :~D

I thought this was something she wanted to reward with the bridle on...

May be. I guess we'll have to wait for her to tell us.

Indeed...

Meanwhile, I got my corn crop planted. ;~D

I just love to grow corn :~D But I have no place in the sun to do a crop right, and I have no way to water a garden out there. So I saw these little started corn plants at the store and thought I can try them in pots :~D

We switched Cyn and the pony's stalls, and Cyn's been in there every night for months since and been just fine. All the sudden tonight, she's acting like there's an invisible monster and she got the pony to buy into it. We looked up in the rafters for some hiding critter.... nothing.

This reminds me of something my two geldings are doing. My husband had to have surgery on his foot a week ago and has had one of those orthopedic boots on. Well it has been so wet and muddy here lately he ties a Wal-Mart bag over his foot and tromps on down to the barn. The two boys start to hopping and bucking and acting like my husband is some sort of monster that is going to eat them alive. Queen the old mare could care less and just watches them make fools of themselves. Blade is pretty bomb proof and Jake is a really laid back horse too and normally a bag would not scare them in the least but tied to a foot scares the daylights out of them.

Oh, another thing I meant to tell you was that my fern was looking pretty good. The half that wasn't doing so well at first has put out about 6 little curls. So I think it'll fill out quite nicely by the end of the summer.

I was real tempted to stop and dig up some ferns out in the Forest on Saturday. They had come up and were real big down in the areas where they did the controlled burn this winter. But Billy convinced me that getting a $500 fine for a .50 fern wasn't a very good deal, so I left them alone. Hopefully I can find some more somewhere else that's not on in a National Forest.

Heh... well, my horse Bay thinks I will one day kill him with a plastic bag, so he'd have been among those hopping and snorting at that. :~D I scared the daylights out of Bay one just by wearing a noise rain slicker.

Cool! I've never tried to grow corn in a pot. It'll be interesting to see how it does and if you get any ears or not. If nothing else, the horses will enjoy the stalks.

Glad to hear it... And glad you were talked out of being arrested :~D

I don't think it'd be prohibited in our forest. There are people who make a living harvesting salal and ferns for florests out of the forest... and mushrooms. In fact, people are so competitive about greens and mushrooms, there was a shooting a few years back over a prime "territory" dispute.

That's what I figured :~D There's about 4 in each bunch there, not sure if they'll end up too crowded, but I didn't want to thin any out, and they were too root bound together to try to break them apart.

That is so strange, but I guess I understand. Some of those mushrooms will bring big bucks. I think some people have been arrested around here for rustling Gensing. LOL! What a thing to get busted for!

She said they did some serious rocking and thought they were going over. Mac stood up and used his weight to fight the steering wheel. He is 70 something and doesn't weigh much. I can imagine it took everything he had to get that bus under control.

Jeez Louise! I'll bet he had to pull the driver's seat out of his butt when he got done too. Coz I know that if it'd been me, mine would've been drawed up so tight that it would've taken a crowbar to get it back out. ;o)

Seriously though, I'll bet he's sore all over from having to fight that steering wheel like that.

In addition to the corn, I planted a few different kinds of little mossy things around a tree :~D That cool little root burl stump thing I found the other day is up in the left hand corner. The big white thing is supposedly perennial... we'll see :~D

That looks nice. It took me a while to make out where the root thing was coz it was kinda blending in.

I'm headed outta here. Got a funeral home visitation tonight for one of my husband's distant relatives. I've never met her but I guess I'll go anyways, just out of respect. Talk to y'all tomorrow.

JP is gone, and I'm tired:) A 2 year old is harder to keep up with then doing 15 miles on a horse:)

Frog, sure hope your friend gets well soon. That sounds rather scarey.

Blade, I really liked your pictures.

Hair, I love home grown corn, I hope yours makes it. The flowers are nice too.

Kristy had a good ride, but came back with 2 of the 4 dogs that went with her limping. Grizzly was one. I think he's just wore out from going with me and Celia yesterday and Kristy today. The other limping one was one of Kris's and she's just older and really really fat:).

Tomorrow I'm going to get stuff done in the house and be ready to ride in the afternoon, for sure.

Becky
