The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We have problems with dry rot on the tires of vehicles that aren't used like the Suzuki and the 5th wheel. It appears tht just sitting in the heat will dry rot them, however the vehicles that are used frequently, like the trailers don't dry rot.

Thanks. I have found a saddle and bridle in Country Supply that I can get for $150. It is available in 16", 17" and 18". It should work fine for a training saddle and later Tracey can use it in endurance - well as long as it lasts anyway :)

I wonder what about using them prevents or slows the damage... Is it because it's not flexing and stretching? Like an unused muscle? Use it or lose it kind of thing?

Good price to at least find out if they like going that way :~D

It seems to be the use that prevents the dry rot. Using the vehicle on the road heats the tires up so that probably helps keep them softer. The tires on our trailer are almost 10 years old with no problems yet.

That's what I thought. It is a jumping saddle and includes stirrup irons, leathers, a web girth and a snaffle bridle with bit and reins. It also has a wide tree to fit Quarter horses so should fit my apps.

When I lived in a mobile home we removed the tires and stored them to prevent this. I just haven't decided if it's the heat or the ground. If it's mud and dirt I can fix that. If it's heat, that's harder. I'm going to call Camping World this week. There may be some kind of cool seal I an get.

We think that Indy (after he loses a little weight will go well English. He has a nice extended trot and a pretty head set. At the last show we were at, we were watching the English classes and my niece was muttering under her breath - "pull your elbows in honey", etc. as we watched the children ride. She was just dying to get out there and show them how to do it right. Tracey just wants to master all disciplines I think. Both the girls ride as well or better than I ever did and have wonderful balance.

I think part of the problem here is that it's so very dry. The lack of humidity just sucks the moisture out of everything.

Well, I'd like to see pictures of them going english :~D

It's really neat to see people that are just really talented riding :~D I'm just tickled that ecurbh turned out to be one of them. It's not easy to teach how to stay on when your horse is hopping in a creek with the saddle slipping toward her underside :~D It's just good balance and reflexes.

Yes it is, isn't it? Some people have wonderful natural balance and just seem to be one with the horse. Others (a friend of ours comes to mind) have all of the desire and expend tremendous effort but will never quite be the rider that a natural is.

I'll definately post pictures :) - how could I dare not do so.

I think that's a good idea. What kind of tires do you have on the trailer? Vehicles carrying weight should have heavier ply and heavier side walls - that might be part of the problem.

Could be. We have just been putting the lower priced Walmart one's on. They are expensive enough. Seems like when all the add ons totaled we paid around 60 for the last one.

Back from breakfast and grocery shopping. Looks like the weather is going to cooperate, altho it is cloudy.

Mack has always said, just sitting will cause dry rot more then if the the tires are being used. I don't know why that is tho.

It's a lucky turn of events for me that he's gonna end up being a good rider without a lot of lessons and training, because I'm not sure he'd find that part all that fun. He just wants to go.

My friend Tiff is probably one of the better natural athletes I know... and she would rather crawl on broken glass than take a lesson or spend any time on training... she does it on the fly, and remarkably gets away with it most of the time :~D

I sure seem steady on Bay, but I can predict every move he makes, so it's easy to stay balanced... I have memory still of getting tossed off a strange horse who had a knack for the unexpected. I've never been on a horse that would buck. My stallion would rear if he acted up, and I got pretty good at riding that. I ride pretty forward... I lose it if there's no neck to hang on to. :~D Maybe that's why I don't like going down steep hills as much as I do up :~D

True... ours are specifically trailer tires.

Balance is something I had to work on. My kids now, they were just both naturals. I've always thought it was more because they started riding as kids. A naturally good seat is a wonderful thing to have:)

:) Going down steep hills always bothered me - I had visions of the horse stumbling and both of us rolling down the hill. I also never liked riding a horse that carrying it's head as low as some of the show western pleasure horses - I learned to keep a head up to withers height at least to prevent bucking.
