The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

One of my hills down to the creek stays wet, and I have to avoid it when it's very wet. Just makes it worse, and a bit trechours. I've had them stumble there from sinking to much.

Looks like our rain is over now, so I'll get a ride in today. Celia is suppose to come if the weather permits. She's really working to get her horse in shape this year, more then other years.

The big pile of old trees that I started burning Fri, is still burning. Even in the rain all day yesterday I was able to keep it going. I've got almost all the deadfall burned now in Harley's pasture, and it was a lot. I bet it was over a rick of wood. I've got a few big limbs and one trunck of a tree with the root end that is just to heavy for me to move onto the fire. But it will make a good training step over. Rocky's side I'm having trouble with. Where the barn roof knocked down and broke off so many trees is out in the woods and moving all that stuff to an opening to burn is going to be a challenge.

When I'm walking, I know I'd sure rather go downhill than up, but horses do treat it as harder... much more careful. Easier and further to fall going down.

I think that loop is where we'll take you the first ride, it's a good length ride to help get you settled on a new horse, without being too long. Everyplace I go out there now I say, "Oh - I want to show that to Becky" mostly areas with lots of BIG ferns. :~D

How are your ferns doing? Are they gonna make it?

We've got winter deadfall out in our back forty too, and the same kind of issue... I'd rather not haul everything to a fire too far away. If it's wet enough above, I'd like to do a bunch of small fires right where the sticks are.

It's pouring good here today... We actually need it. I'm not ready for the pasture to start drying out, I want it to grow. I just feel bad because it was so sunny all week, and I feel bad for the folk who have to work all week and then get a rainy weekend.

If I remember to get batteries today I'll take a picture of it:)

I'd say it's still iffy if it's going to make it. It hasn't done much this last week. There are still curls that haven't uncruled on the one that seemed to be doing good, The ones that have uncurles seem rather fragile altho they have put on some green leaves. The one that I cut all the curls off, now it seems the stronger. It's put out about 3 need fronds and leaves on it are a lot longer, wider, do you know what I mean, but they are not as long. That might have been the best thing to do cutting all the curls that were there off. It might be that gave the roots a chance to grow to support the fronds.

Off subject, but I wanted to show you all a bird I saw at my feeders. I had no clue we had birds like this here, it's a summer visitor. I did not take this picture, it's from google,

Could be we have learned to cut off all the new growth when moving them like that... Your's are not really ~behind~ ours if they aren't uncurled yet. Our new growth is still uncurling. There weren't any ready to take pictures of in the woods yesterday. Here's some that are right by the house that get pretty big... They still look rather puny now. Just took this picture:

If I remember to get batteries today I'll take a picture of it:)

Yeah - that, and your trail ride :~D

Morning yall
I have to go in to work in awhile and then go get two tires for my trailer. I'm having a problem with dry rot. After the end of the month I'm not going to share it with my trainer anymore and bring it home. Ysll think being on concrete will make a difference?

Dry rot is a big deal on the floor. Was it used when you got it? If it's at all iffy, have the floor replaced. You do need to do that every several years on a trailer. You do NOT want to have a horse go through the floor going down the road, as I'm sure you can imagine.

The key to not having it rot is to not let it stay wet. I'm surprised you have an issue down there with infrequent rain and your heat. Our trailer is open on the sides like yours, and we tarped it over winter. Sometimes the rubber mats trap moisture underneath them and should be pulled out if you aren't going to be using it for awhile... I at least flip them up after hosing it out, to let the floor dry completely underneath.

I wouldn't think being on concrete verses ground would make that much of a difference, unless it's consistently damp ground or overgrown.

The tires are what are dry rotting. Rubber just peels off.

OH- The tires... that's probably just the heat, huh? Our rubber doesn't break down like that up here... But I've seen how hard the heat is on rubber in AZ. Do you notice that on your vehicles too?

We change tires on our cars probably a lot more than most but we also put a lot of miles on them. About the trailer though, I have already replaced two. They look fine and then start throwing rubber on the road.

I'm gonna guess the trailer tires may just break down from the sun long before they wear down from miles. The hot climate folk will be better versed than me on that. Maybe rubber treatments would work... maybe just shading them from the sun while it sits would work.

I would start with a 17". You measure from the nail head on the waist to the cantle.

Well we have a concrete runner beside the house and I'm bring it home at the end of the month. I don't think this a mile issue. We probably have about 3000 miles on it and tires are good for around 50000.

Right... I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that the trainer's been using it, I think it's probably just the sun.
