I wonder what about using them prevents or slows the damage... Is it because it's not flexing and stretching? Like an unused muscle? Use it or lose it kind of thing?

It seems to be the use that prevents the dry rot. Using the vehicle on the road heats the tires up so that probably helps keep them softer. The tires on our trailer are almost 10 years old with no problems yet.
