The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think a lab/border collie mix is a really nice combination.

I have to agree, since I have one too! :-) He loves his cookies. That's my hand and part of my face in the pic.

I love that last pic of him with one ear toward you as if he's saying "What ARE you doing to me, lady?"

That's a darling, smart dog. Here's a picture of the little redbud I ssaved from the drought, but it's now raining at last, and it is very happy. I haven't been pinged lately but I can find the thread anyway.

The bus for sale on ebay was in the sunken fleet close to the stadium. The listing has a picture of the fleet and a circle around the bus listed.

Very similar build and face shape to my guy - I love that white stripe, though!

He has manners to learn...still doesn't know to keep all four feet on the ground when greeting someone, for one, but he strikes me as really smart. He'll be a good boy once he's settled in a bit and learned the basics.

He'll be a good boy once he's settled in a bit and learned the basics.

Mine retests his limits once he's in a new place to see what he can and cannot get away with. My parents have moved a few times and taken him with them, and for the first week or so he will be the most misbehaved dog on the face of the planet, getting into the trash, chasing the cat, etc. But once he knows that he's not on vacation, he settles right back in. Becareful with small children and small animals. Your dog WILL want to herd them or chase them, or get his mouth on them. It's the border collie. And he probably will love to swim too. Mine goes beserk near water.

You'll have to be careful, because they're too smart. We're starting to have to spell infront of ours (and I'm not kidding) He knows the difference between "Go to Mat's room" and "Go lay down" If you tell him to go to Mat's room, he'll go straight to my brother's room. If you tell him to go lay down he'll go find a place to lay down. He taught himself that. He'll hound you until he gets what he wants, and he knows tons of silly dog tricks. He has plenty of good manners though, even though he has to have the last word if he gets punished. (He'll mutter to himself if you tell him to go to his room or lay down) He'll get his leash if you tell him to, and will go get your shoes. (And get the matching pair, no less) Though he'll insist on running around with them and flipping them up in the air. He is the most aware and human like dog that I have ever had, and sometimes it's unsettling. It sounds fantastic, but it's true. You're going to have a lot of fun with yours.

I think pound dogs are the smartest. They also seem eager to please.

Good Morning.

Squarebarb, you are on my list at work. Let me know if you do not get a ping.

Well, if he acts like a BC, he needs a BC name - something short and descriptive - BCs in our club are named things like Edge, Rage, Jock, Blue, Blitz, and Mick.

See post 2593 for some BC names! (These are the best dogs in our club - mostly Master Agility CHampions and such like.)

. . . and do watch the herding tendencies. Hopefully the Lab will ameliorate that (on the other hand, my full blood Lab likes to herd other dogs and children, too. She's never had a chance to try sheep, but she was VERY interested when she saw some. Maybe it's all the hanging around with BCs at agility class . . .)

The one this week isn't really a good one, as far as general shoeing principles goes. It's about treating Laminitis, and I think the next few are going to be about that too. But it's still interesting.

G'Mornin'! How was Cisco's first night home? Did he get to sleep with you, or does he have his own bed yet?

Your dog sounds really cool, and he's cute too. You can't beat that! I think that's the kind of dog I want, whenever I finally decide to get one.

He's been dubbed Cisco...kinda sorta short for Francisco, his patron saint. ;-)

So far he's been pretty good with the cats. He's interested in them, but hasn't done any chasing or barking or anything. Hopefully he'll realize the futility of herding cats...
