This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Rosie went to the pound and got a dog today, so now we're even more in need of getting her fence done :~D
But at the moment, she's settling in with him and trying to come up with a name....
I saw him on the HH, He is beautiful. Such kind eyes:) I'm not good with names at all:), good luck.

If it wasn't that I'm just bored silly waiting on that saddle I wouldn't be doing this sort of thing with the horse. It maybe a blessing having this wait, none of this stuff can possible hurt:)
I guess it's because I don't have a choice, but this is one of the few times I'm enjoying ground work.
Becky
Have a great day :)
Started Raining here. Little stinging rain:)
I planted some of my seedlings this morning. Hope it doesn't beat them into the ground.

Good job with the lunging! He looks like he's really doing well. It might be fun to work him over some obstacles if you run out of things to do. I've been watching the Extreme Cowboy Race thing and they've been doing that.
Yeah, I was thinking about that. What sort of obstacles could you do on the ground? Suggestions?

He sure is a pretty dog. I think a lab/border collie mix is a really nice combination. I like the name she's tentatively picked out too. Cisco seems to fit him.
I'm amazed that her cats haven't pitched a fit. I'd like to have a dog at some point, but if I brought a dog in the house, I think my cats would have a heart attack. They've been outside and know what dogs can do to cats. So if I ever do get one, it'll have to be a tiny pup and be raised around cats.
Her cats have been around dogs before, and got used to mine pretty quick when she was here. Cats that have been raised with cat-trained dogs are almost ~too~ confident around them.
Oh, I just wanted you to know too, that I've made a hard copy of the trimming and shoeing section on those NB Shoes. The more I read and learn about them the more they just make sense to me. Like the difference I would feel if I went on a 5 mile hike in a pair of Keds vs. Nike's. They just seem like they would be sooooo much better for the horse as a whole.
I'm going to call Chris next week and have a chat with him about them. I want to know why he said Harley didn't "need" them, and what the difference in cost will be to put those on.
I also finally (I hesitate to start getting to many opinions, just gets confusing) asked on the Natrc site if any one there heard about/uses them. There is a farrier over there that from everything I've heard at the rides he's pretty good. He competes all the time, and posts every day over there. I hope he reads my post about the NB shoes, and says if he has heard of them.
Anyway, unless I get alot of negative feed back, I'm probably going to get Chris to put them on next time. I'm going to have my printout in hand and ask him to go over each step with me, "just so I know" :). I want to make sure he knows how to do it, and not just nailing them one any ole way.

Trotting poles or a couple of cavaletti would be good. First one, then add more.
Well, some of the trail/obstacle classes I've seen at shows have had old tires to walk through. You could make an "L" shape out of hay bales or lumber or some such and use it to back him through. Teach him to sidepass down the length of a stack of hay bales or a log or something. Set up some barrels and have him back between two of them, then sidepass him over and come back between two different ones, while you stay in one spot. Set up a jump and lunge him over it like Hair does. You could think up all kinds of stuff if you really got creative.
Well, Kristy ran off with my cavalettis:(. But that would be good. I might see if I can dig something up for him to trot over.

I tried the side passing thing today, but I'm not real sure how to go about doing it from the ground. He just kept wanting to step around in a circle.

Have you had a chance to watch any of the NB Hoofcare Corner on the Dennis Reis show on RFDTV that I told you about?
No, actually, I forgot about that. I apologize. I'll go look it up and set the timer right now.
Becky
I'll keep my fingers crossed on the seedlings. Very odd weather here. Had the air conditioner on in my car at lunch, sun shining and snow falling ??? This is a new one even for Nevada :)
My cats pretty much ignore dogs once they're convinced the dog isn't going to pull anything on them. I think they'll be OK...so far he's tried to sniff at them a few times, but no growling or barking or chase attempts. It might be trickier if the cats spent time outdoors, I dunno...but as it is, I think they'll work out an arrangement of some kind. ;-)
What a cute dog!
Those buses need to be marked so they aren't used again in NO and the $$$ for new buses used for something else. They aren't all ruined because a kid drove one to Houston.
