The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You measure from the button on the front to the back center of the cantle.

Not sure about the CAIR panels... whether yours (or mine) has em.

My husband would burn the house down if he tried to cook.

This Funniest Home Videos is all Halloween and it is FUNNY. Lots of good practical jokes.

To get a measurement on an english saddle, measure from the nail head on the skirt back to the middle of the cantle. The measuring tape will cut at an angle across the saddle. (the nail should be slightly below and around the area of the pommel if you don't know where the skirt on an english saddle is) :-) I can't say that I remember all the parts of the western saddle all the time...

Yup - 17.5 - the most common and easy to sell size out there.

I'm the one that burns stuff. My husband is a better cook than I am. He just needs more pots and pans:') I excell at making sweets though, which is just what I need. I always thought it would be neat to own my own candy store and make homemade stuff. I would probably eat up all the inventory though:')

Ditto to what Hair said. I usually ride in a 16.5. I slide all around in a 17.5 inch. Don't know what it is.

It is odd... but I guess the amount of cutback on the wither is not consistent, and the button is, I guess. :~D

But it always surprised me. I mean, the difference is only an inch... but sometimes it was really hard for me to stay in the saddle!

To: HairOfTheDog; All

Hearing about all those precious horses today in the New Jersy fire got me thinking about my little pony, and I realized I haven't posted in some time. An update just to let you know I didn't just up and die...

I peek in here everyday when I get a chance, but I've barely had time lately to post, and then it's sually late at night to prayer threads. We've been finalizing our yearly ag plans, and it looks like we're going to need to leave our big pasture (the one where I had planned to paddock Ranger) in hay production this next year. It's just too rare in Texas and with our drought-stricken neighbors clamoring for more hay, we've decided we'll hay it out this year and keep Ranger in my neighbor's pasture next door with his buddies for now.

We feed him everyday separately and work with him in the round pen, and he's socializing really well. Halter work has started, but the fun's been tempered by the fact that some of Ranger's pasture buddies are the ornriest pregnant mares I've ever met. They aren't just mean, they're **tchy. They bite and chase the stallions, and they nearly run everybody out of the pasture. Fortunately, they don't seem to care about Ranger one way or another, but I am going to ask if he could be relocated to the pasture next to them instead. I haven't met these mares before pregnancy (Ranger was put in with them three weeks ago) but neighbor says they are usually gentle. Perhaps it's just the late pregnancy blues, but I think they're just evil. Of course, they aren't MY babies... but they better not bite MY baby, Ranger.

Anyhoo, here's to hay. I hope we got enough rain to produce some. We're going to donate 10% to ranchers affected by wildfire, save some for Ranger, and share the rest of the roundbales with our neighbors as needed. If I have any extra to sell after that, that'd be nice too...

But first, feed the horsies!

I had to move my mare out of the mare pasture. Horses in the pasture usually don't bother me. Those girls had meanness in their eyes though. I would make them back up but never turned my back because they would sneak up the other side. The boys, no problem.

It's ok, I'm through ranting but thanks for the offer. I've been hanging around to many fish people to have come up with spawn so easily. I guess I better find some live stock people to hang out with also. Hope you feel better.

I'm just irritated. I have wisdom teeth cramping my jaw and a root canal that didn't work. I have to get three teeth pulled next week. I'm gonna feel like a toothless old hag. It has to be better than this though. I'm on a granny diet.

Good news though, lol. I was still scatching my head about the pesto. How much and do I eat it raw. The instructions were on the back side of the lid when I opened it:')

Hair: I'm sorry you're feeling bad. You might try this "sleep" thing we've all heard of so much. "Sleep" must be a liberal thing, because I don't think anyone at Freerepublic ever does it...

CindyDawg: My heart goes out to you. Wisdom teeth are a real beast - I had mine removed YEARS ago in my teens because of crowding, and I can tell you it was a relief. You'll feel much better as soon as you get them bad boys out.
