Court to Weigh Race as Factor in School Rolls
By LINDA GREENHOUSE
WASHINGTON, June 5 The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to rule on what measures, if any, public school systems may use to maintain racial balance in individual schools.
The eventual decision on whether they can take race into account could affect hundreds of school systems in all areas of the country. The court accepted challenges to plans in Louisville, Ky., where the schools were once racially segregated by law, and in Seattle, where segregation was never official but was widespread because of residential patterns.
Federal appeals courts upheld these plans, both of which offer students a choice of schools while taking race into account in deciding which transfer applications to accept. Variations of this approach are common, and have been under legal attack around the country.
The Supreme Court's decision to add the cases to the calendar for its next term, a step that by all appearances was controversial within the court and unexpected outside it, plunged the new Roberts court into one of the country's deepest constitutional debates.
The action came three years after the court upheld a racially conscious admissions plan at the University of Michigan Law School. Writing for the majority in that 5-to-4 decision, Grutter v. Bollinger, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor suggested that, at least in higher education, affirmative action might be necessary for another 25 years.
The new cases do not ask the court to revisit that decision, and the justices are unlikely to do so. But the implications are far-reaching nonetheless. The eventual decision, roughly a year from now, could not only set the court's path in this area but could also shape the climate in which government policies with respect to race will be debated.
Schumer changes tune on bioterror cuts Schumer leads push to reclaim lost funding for bioterror programs he previously voted to cut, records showLink
Jun 6, 2006
BY GLENN THRUSH, Newsday Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- Sen. Charles Schumer, who has likened $7 million in federal cuts to New York's bioterrorism programs to "rubbing salt in an open wound," voted to cut those programs by 10.4 percent last year, according to Senate records.Schumer (D-N.Y.) is pressuring Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Julie Gerberding to recalculate a new funding formula that disproportionately reduces aid to the state. Schumer, who red-flagged the issue during a news conference Sunday, will take his case directly to Gerberding today.
CANADA'S CRY: 'WHY US?'Continued... NY Post
By RACHEL MARSDEN
June 6, 2006 -- TORONTO
THE arrests of 17 Toronto-area Muslim men - allegedly intent on blowing up such southern Ontario targets as CN Tower, Parliament and the Toronto Stock Exchange - led to some Nancy Kerrigan "why me?" moments among Canadians.
Folks here think that targeting Canadians is like gunning for the Care Bears. A mere flash of a Canadian flag on our backpacks is supposed to make people from all over the world want to hug, feed and clothe us.
The reaction to what might've been the biggest terrorist attack in North America was the same when Osama bin Laden, and more recently, the Taliban's Mullah Dadullah threatened Canada: Surely they didn't mean it. After all, no country is more diverse and tolerant than Canada.
And no city within Canada is more Muslim-loving and liberal than Toronto; the provincial government even considered sanctioning oppressive Muslim Sharia law. Want to live in a ghetto with your peeps and not have to integrate with your fellow Canadians? Toronto is the place for you.
So why, people here ask, would anyone want to do damage to Toronto? Maybe they don't. No one has been convicted of anything yet. Maybe the three tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer that the suspects allegedly ordered were going to be used to grow a massive garden that would spell out "I Love Canada!" in tulips.
And that cell phone jimmied up to a circuit board, seized in the police raid? That doesn't have to be a detonator. Some kids put spoilers and shiny rims on their Honda Civics; maybe others just like to fiddle with their phones because Nokia can't keep up with the technological preferences of today's young Muslims.
Yes, I guess it's possible that various law-enforcement agencies that normally can't agree on what kind of pizza to order conspired against 17 innocent Muslims.
As the authorities have said, "It's important to note this operation in no way reflects negatively on any specific community or ethnocultural group" - right before revealing a list of suspect names that read like a cast list for Osama bin Laden's "E! True Hollywood Story."
Will check back soon .. Been helping Jess with the computer and making video for her friend that is graduating this year..
For the time being, she thinks I'm cool .. though I'm sure it will wear off soon
FOFLOL. Enjoy it while it last. You'll prolly become "uncool" shortly after you've finished the video.
That'd take SOME doing.
Oh, you have no idea!
We went shopping . . .
LOL! That's just wrong.
Are you sure you're not related to Darks?
Don't you know that can will get you in trouble?
Another liberal nation that just got mugged. And during the Cup finals, Eh?
Great articles, thanks for posting them. How's the heat down there?
My wife has a way of doing that to me, even if we don't live in the Upper Peninsula.........
He does, doesn't he? And that's exactly what he said about the possums, until he was busted.
Looks good to me. Beautiful pictures. Maybe it looks screwy to you because your eyes haven't adjusted to sunlight yet.
I kid you not.
Well.......Darks?
"Well.......Darks?"
.
No, we're from different systems.
Isn't he a sweetheart? sarc/ - I kid you not, I've been expecting a bomb to go off in Ottawa (I thought) especially since Stephen Harper became PM. He has their number. In fact, he's been deporting illegals all over the place. Amongst many other bold moves. He has the Ottawa media in a tailspin and his poll numbers just keep rising.
I'm sure this is only one of many cells allowed to operate in this country under the pathetic Liberals. In fact, in Ontario and Quebec they have so many Muslims that there are actually two Liberal representatives in Parliament. They cluster in huge numbers and actually take over a riding and get themselves elected. But me thinks, not any more. There has already been some backlash!! The East Indians (Sikhs) did it also. Deceitful and violent group of people.
