The Tamil language belongs to the Dravidian family of languages which is completely different from the Indo-European family.Almost nothing is known about its origins except that this language was at one time spoken all over India before the Aryans gained dominance of northern India. The Dravidian language family (Brahui language)probably originated in the Indus valley (modern day Pakistan). It is said that the Dravidian family of languages may be a distant relative of the Uralic family (the the only language family having the slightest similarity with the Dravidian languages). The Tamil language is oldest surviving language in this family. Here is an example of the Tamil script:

I have read that Korean could be in the Dravidian language family. I think I have read that Dravidian speaking people have a legend that they are from what is now Indonesia, also known as Sundaland, which is likely Atlantis.

Actually blam has a good link to a book that proposes an origin in South-East Asia -- when the sea levels rose at the end of the ice age, 10500 years ago, the people escaped to lands on the sea-coasts to the west of Indonesia -- namely to Tamil Nadu and the Indus VAlley and Sumeria (Iraq). That's why there was trade between the Indus VAlly and Sumeria. Also, this belies the Aryan "invasion" theory -- the Aryans mingled in with the city people (the Harappans)
