CHAMPS!!!!! STEELERS WIN SUPERBOWL
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | 2/5/2006 | Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

STEELERS WIN SUPERBOWL X-TRA LARGE DETROIT - Mick Jagger moved up and down the field at halftime more easily than the Pittsburgh offense did for most of the game. In the end, though, Jerome Bettis, the Steelers and their thousands of rowdy fans wound up the big winners on Super Bowl Sunday. Save for a few big plays that changed the game, style points were hard to come by on America's annual football holiday. But to Pittsburgh, the 21-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks was beautiful _ a gritty grind of a game that included just enough flair to transform a blue-collar team playing in a blue-collar city into champions.

In a stadium brimming with thousands of Pittsburgh fans waving Terrible Towels, the Steelers finally captured their fifth title, that "One for the Thumb" they've been chasing since 1980.

"It's almost unreal right now," coach Bill Cowher said.

It's a great day for Pittsburgh, and congrats from a 'Hawks fan.

I don't think it is a great day for the NFL.

Seattle fans shouldn't use the officiating as an excuse for a game that the 'Hawks had plenty of chances to win, but they couldn't make it happen.

That doesn't change the fact that the officiating was questionable.

The refs don't work for the Steelers, and it doesn't take away from a great Steeler victory. I salute the team that made the best of what was available, and that was the Steelers, no doubt about it.

A great day for the NFL would have had either team winning with out questionable calls.

Again, congrats to the Steelers and the tremendous fans they have.

Doesnt St. Louis have a HUGE offensive lineman named Orlando Pace?

This seems to sum up this thread rather well.

I'm an AFC fan and am happy Pittburgh won because it represents our conference and division well. But as a football fan and consumer (season ticket holder) I find the lack of quality officiating and boring unimaginative play in this game of this so called highest level of professional ranks apalling. This game didn't hold a candle to the Rose Bowl.

SuperBowls are often pretty lackluster games. The first ten were not very good contests. I thought XL as a game was pretty good, insofar as not being a blowout, with two pretty evenly matched teams.

I do hope that the NFL does do something to improve the officiating. Porter was right to complain after the playoffs. He would be right to complain now, but I'm not holding my breath. :-)

"Congratulations to the Steelers from a harcore Indianapolis fan. They earned it."

I'm with you, at least they didn't beat Indy for nothing. That was my biggest fear.

As typical for Detroit...the Bus didn't show up.

But unfortunately in a game of inches, there were a handful of crucial plays where the Seahawks were on the wrong end of the measuring stick:
field goals a foot right, a foot left...one foot out of bounds...etc...

The Steelers won by the hair on Cower's chinny chin chin....which in his case alone is wide margin.

No one should be allowed to sing the Nat'l Anthem at major events except service academy choruses. Entertainers butcher it with their various show biz "interpretations" that generally stink. Last night's was particularly pathetic, and the cameras should have averted their gaze as these ageing folk struggled to finish it. Really, the NFL needs to get a clue about their entertainment. A great marching band and John Phillip Sousa would have been vastly more appreciated by their audience than the geriatric Strolling Bones at half time.

I agree that was probably one of the worst Nat'l Anthem's I've ever heard.

Does anyone know why Bradshaw wasn't in the opening ceremony with the other MVP winners?

The Refs should've been named MVP - and I'm not a Seahawks fan!

"Hasselbeck avoided pressure and hit Darrell Jackson in the back of the end zone with a beautiful strike. The Pittsburgh cornerback immediately turned to back judge Bob Waggoner and begged for an offensive pass-interference call. After a couple of seconds of thought, Waggoner granted the Pittsburgh request and erased Seattle's hard-earned touchdown." ---

****

Jackson pushed off to get free for the TD. And he did it in the endzone right in front of the official. Perhaps that call is not made in the middle of the field with an official standing right there and a TD not scored. Well it wasn't in the middle of the field and it was right in front of the official. The call was correct.

And the only thing that delayed the flag being thrown earlier was that tight pocket of the official.

It was the right call. The defender is not allowed to push off! Eat this, WHITLOCK!

It appeared that both teams played themselves out just getting to the Super Bowl. Bad game, bad calls, bad ABC production. As a football fan with no favorite in the game, I was disappointed. All the trash talking that Porter did all week long, did he even make it onto the field?

I knew seattle had a TD taken away,

Because the receiver cheated -- while it doesn't get called often enough, it was the right call. He was open for the TD only because he pushed off from the defender.

Pit got a TD given to them,

Call on the field was a TD. The replay was inconclusive -- I would say it was not clear enough to overturn the call either way (i.e., had it been ruled short, the replay would not have been enough for a TD, either). Pittsburgh would likely have gotten the 0.1 inch needed on 4th down anyway.

Seattle passed to the 1 yrd line for 1st down and that was taken away from them.

Again, because they weree cheating. The O-line couldn't stop the pass rush except by holding Steelers players. Hassleback never would have gotten the pass off if his blockers weren't holding the guy about to kill him.

Whine all you like, the Seahawks lost because they were outplayed when it mattered, and made more mental mistakes at key times.

Yea, Ben Roethlisbergers 22.22 QB rating was AWESOME!

Randel-El's 158.3 looks pretty good, though.

They didnt call the defensive holding so they shouldnt call the pushoff either. especially since the pushoff isnt what gave him the separation, listen to any of the people watching the game, they also said it was a horrible call. Didnt you hear Steve Young at halftime?

Call on the field was a TD. The replay was inconclusive -- I would say it was not clear enough to overturn the call either way (i.e., had it been ruled short, the replay would not have been enough for a TD, either). Pittsburgh would likely have gotten the 0.1 inch needed on 4th down anyway.

Why didnt they call it short on the field? The refs first reaction said short, then he said TD.... Why didnt he make Pit review it FOR the TD? Also I dont believe pit would have went for it on 4th down, they shut Bettis down 2 times before that and if they would have gotten stoned and came away with no points it would have been bad. Cower would have went for the points.

Again listen to all the commentators and they also say that was a BS call! Madden said it right away and this morning they are also saying it. so right there thats 14 points robbed from Seattle. I really dont care i was a Bears fan before this game and now wont watch it anymore.

that play never should have happened in the first place. Seattle should have been 1st & goal.
