It would seem there is truth to the warnings against the Harry Potter series if the opening of an honest-to-goodness witchcraft school in Canada is any indication of increased interest in the occult that has resulted from the books.

Why do they always pick on Canada!
The Canadians aren't anymore prone to occult or new age stuff than any other country.

I'm not disputing that the occult, or at least a belief in the occult, exists. I certainly dispute that a book can be the gateway to the occult.
I chalk that up to bad parenting.

Having lived my whole life in Michigan, I can't stop myself from making fun of Canada. It's in my blood.
In a sense, I'm poking fun at the mitten. We generally think of Canada as Really Northern Michigan.

I need to say in defense of the Harry Potter boooks.
Like other FANTASY novels, it is fiction!
I'm not disputing the existance of the occult, that unfortuneately is very real.
But I just know that a novel or series that is Sci-Fi/Fantasy will not turn anybody into witches or wizards or turn them on to evil things unless the reader has the inclination to evilo in them in the first place.
And if anybody has a weak faith than maybe they shouldn't be reading HP or any other fantasy book.

At least they are not using Jonah Goldberg's nickname for the country, "Soviet Canuckistan."
I know lots of people here in the general neighborhood of Washington DC who have 'Starfleet Academy,' 'Vulcan Science Academy,' or similar bumper stickers on their cars. Unfortunately, they are almost all flaming liberals.

Maybe I'm not holding my wand correctly or something. My Mom made a big fuss when she would catch me holding my wand. Must have been the same with you, too.

... and having lived my whole life in Ontario but also having spend a lot of my childhood visiting family members in Michigan*, to me, the marked contrast between downtown Detroit & - forget just Northern! - most other parts of Michigan goes well beyond anything we have on our side of the border - LOL!
... and, no, we're not offering a returns policy on your Governor.

Well, not exactly. My mom was always trying to get us boys to at least point our wands in the right direction. "Can't you boys at least TRY to aim?" was the way she generally put it.

Mrs. Reb and I work at two Star Trek conventions a year at the Hunt Valley Inn. We have met some interesting people over the years, but the cons tend to attract a lot of weirdos, liberals and homosexuals. IMHO, people who prefer to live in a fantasy world - be it Harry Potter, Star Trek or whatever - are the ones who have severe problems in the real world.
However, a lot of well-adjusted folks enjoy the escapism inherent in science fiction or fantasy without getting lost in it. The vast majority of the employees at the Goddard Space Center call themselves hard-core Star Trek fans and they live very normal productive lives.
