The only problem with the "Cowboy Kid" is he can't sing. Don't know why, exactly, but for some reason he annoys the heck out of me.

Comments from Randy and Bo on Kelly's two wins last night (from AP/entertainment media):

Ten minutes away, at Sony BMG's outdoor party at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, another first-time Grammy winner, Kelly Clarkson, held court.

Chatting with friends and dancing to a DJ's pounding grooves, the former "American Idol" champion was the night's "it" girl - beating out favored pick Mariah Carey to snag the coveted Best Female Pop Performance award.

"I think it's amazing. It validates the show," said "Idol" judge Randy Jackson. "I'm really happy for her. I think she's really over the moon because I think she thought she'd never win it."

Clarkson’s win, and Carey’s lack of an eight-Grammy sweep, was also the subject of talk at other parties.

“I’m real proud of Kelly,” “Idol” runner-up Bo Bice said outside of EMI’s lavish bash at Paramount Studios.

“I definitely support her. She’s done a great job of showing the music community she’s about a lot more substance than just a pretty face, and a nice hind quarters,” he said with a grin.

I did and I am pleased to see him looking better. :) I know you are not as favorable towards our newest B'ham native on AI this season, but I am hearing alot of good comments from some of the locals about him. They say once you get passed the gray hair and nervous tics his performances are really good. He performs in a couple of the clubs here. So I am hoping he will do well because they say he is very nice as well. We didn't get to see the little cowboy that everyone is talking about. I missed the night he auditioned and my VCR decided to stop taping halfway throuhg the program last night....I think my cat hit the remote! He must have decided the singing wasn't good enough. He can be such a critic. :P)

Ken, Mariah Carey was nominated for 8 Grammys this year, and won three. She had been expected to sweep all eight.

He's OK. Definitely wil not win the competition. Right now I think Paris is the odds-on choice to win it all. She has everything going for her, including the fact that the judges are already in her corner. Once again it looks like the guys are weaker than the girls this year. Sigh.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sold on Paris Bennett. I think she has an excellent voice, don't get me wrong. It's just that I don't really see her as being able to pull off "pop" singing, week after week.

I'll place my early bets on Katherine McPhee and Lisa Tucker.

It's interesting to see them at this stage and wonder if they can turn "buried" talent into gold. I thought Patrick Hall has the makings of a terrific voice. We'll see if that comes to pass.

The cowboy munchkin tickled me! What a cutie. I thought his audition would be awful, but he also has the makings of a good voice -- a sort of rough 'n' ready voice, not a smooth voice like Patrick Hall. It will be interesting to see if he progresses some more before he's cut.

Not that excited about any of the women so far. Paris has a terrific voice, but she seems a little complacent about it. It will be interesting to see how she performs.

BTW, thanks for all your AI recaps, kevkrom! I don't always agree completely, but I always look forward to seeing them. I have to ask, though -- do you watch the show with a notepad in hand? :)

Actually, yes. And with TiVo, I can go back and see something I missed. I never actually watch AI "live", but usually about 30-45 minutes delayed.

It's not just you. Personally, I like Katherine a lot. But I belive the judges and AI machinery will try to tilt the competition toward Paris. With her connections, the girl doesn't need AI. Such is the status of the show now that some people who wouldn't have been caught dead entering it a couple of years ago now see it as a shortcut to careers they probably would have achieved anyway.

The Cowboy kid is just a little too Brokeback Mountain for me. Lacks good control over his voice and his tomne is weak. that little Paris chick is good. HUGE booming voice in such a little package.

Some pretty good singers (at least from the auditions) choked crashed and burned. They also let some really weak singers thru to the next round when dumping better singers in other "groups of 8".

Oh, and kev...as a red-blooded female, I still keep looking for that hunky guy with a great voice and performance skills; someone who could actualy win the contest. So far the only male AI winner has not exactly been someone to set my heart a'fluttering. ;-)

Yeah, but I'm too old to qualify for AI.

The ONLY thing I see that causes me concern is that CBS is the affiliate. :( Hope they don't make it from their liberal point of view

Well, now that you mention it, David Mamet is one of the creators of the show. He's a great writer (he wrote the script for "Glengarry Glenn Ross", adapted from his play. He also so wrote the screenplays for action movies like "The Untouchables", "The Edge" and "Heist"). But he's also a HUGE lefty and Bush-basher. He contributes regularly to the Huffington (com)Post:

The bumper sticker reading "in Texas some village is short of an idiot" is an absolute announcement of surrender. The "idiot" and his administration have taken the keys to the kingdom, by exploiting, tactically and strategically, Democratic weakness, passivity and smugness. It is not the Republicans who are risible, but their opponents. It's as if a burglar broke into someone's house to steal the television and the homeowner insisted he stay, while he called his broker to make sure the thief also got the stocks and bonds.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-mamet/democratic-weakness-pass_b_7638.html

So while I'm looking forward the The Unit, we should be on the look out for Mamet's liberalism to bleed into the storylines. I'm hoping it won't. But as we just saw at the Coretta Scott King funeral, the left just can't help themselves :-/

That 70's Show. ... Sometimes that show can be really funny, but I had to stop watching when one of the characters kept wearing the Che Guivarra(sp?) t-shirt

That has to be Hide :-/

The show used to be very funny, but it went downhill last year when Donna dyed her hair blonde. I never understood why she did that. She has beautiful red hair. Why cover that up? Then the cast started to fall apart ... blah. It's no surprise that it's been canceled.

'American Idol' crushes Grammys in ratings

NEW YORK -- Some humbling news for the pros: By a wide margin, TV viewers prefer the amateurs.

Nearly twice as many people watched "American Idol" than the Grammy Awards Wednesday when the two music programs went head-to-head in prime time, according to preliminary estimates by Nielsen Media Research.

The "Idol" audience on Fox was 28.3 million while the Grammy Awards were being watched by 15.1 million people from 8 to 9 p.m. EST, Nielsen said.

Thanks for the ping, CB :)
