I'm gonna start doing this thread on a quarterly basis.
The last time I did it, I got some very interesting answers from Freepers.
What are you reading? It can be anything. A classic. A technical journal. A trashy pulp novel. Soldier of Fortune magazine. Anything.
I'll start. I'm reading: "The Campaign of the Century: Upton Sinclair's race for Governor of California and the birth of media politics".
So far, it's not a bad read. But what did you expect? I'm a Pol Sci major.
Well, what are you reading?
" "The Future of the Past", but I've lost track of the book itself. Has to be around here somewhere"
You have brought this upon yourself. Some things should be left alone, and not looked into. Now you've done it..and since you didn't read the end of the book first (Muttly fashion), we may never know where your book is.
I think it is so cool that he pointed out the book is fiction but the footnotes are real; who ELSE could get away with writing a fiction book with real footnotes? LOL!
Re-reading "A Parliament of Whores"- P.J. O'Rourke- The single funniest book I have ever read- even though it is also the BEST book on politics your will ever read.
THIS SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR ALL FREEPERS!!!
And who else could make a book about "global warming" (or the lack thereof) a thriller that is hard to put down?
I just finished "The Constant Princess" by Phillipa Gregory. It's about Katherine of Aragon.
Not sure what's next.
Becky
That sounds interesting- what's it about?
I had read some of PJ's National Lampoon pieces back in the 80s, but when this was first published it became the first O'Rourke book I ever read. The chapter titles in the table of contents alone had me rolling with laughter!

Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace Revisited and Grisham's Painted House (or a variation of it). going to getting Dan Miller's 48 days to finding the work you love.
He was part of the morning team on Air American. I think he's left the show. He did a similar book for Ohio. Neat, weird stuff.
J. Edgar Hoover, The Man and The Secrets
by Curt Gentry
This is my first time.
My favorite thus far, if I had to pick one, would probably be "HMS Suprise." But, "The Fortune of War" looks promising.
BTW, I simply cannot believe it gets better. :0)

I've recently signed on with The Conservative Book Club and I get three free books for my membership. I've ordered the following:
-The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History/Thomas Woods
- The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the crusades) by Robert Spencer
- Do as I say not as I do (about that hypocrit Michael Moore) by Peter Schweizer
- Creation Geology by Charlie Liebert
- Whatever It Takes (Illegal Immigration) by J.D. Hayworth
- Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate over Science and Religion/Edward Larson
I guess I went a little wild..... :-)))
Anybody else read any of these? What was your opinion?
It gets better!!
My personal favorite is Reverse of the Medal, but thats a bit down the line...
nothing tops the debauched sloth scene though. LOL
"You've debauched my sloth."
That still cracks me up. How O'Brian had Maturin deal with it in such an understated manner, where the reader may even over look it, is so good.
Funny that I had never even heard of these novels until the movie was released. I watched the movie, and decided I HAD to read those books.
They are simply some of the finest literature in print. I find myself surprised by O'Brian's attention to detail and erudition every time I sit down to read.
Just finished Barbara Tuchman's "Distant Mirror". Highly recommended; history of 14th century France, England, Italy (mainly).
Now reading Roy Medvedev's "Let History Judge". All about Stalin's crimes, written by a Soviet historian in the late '60s. The perspective is a bit odd, since he's a devout Communist, but his insights into Stalin and his henchmen is excellent.
I'm reading a series of books concerning hieroglyphs. I plan on being able to passably read same by the end of 2006.
