~The Dragon Flies' Lair~Poetry Thread XXIV~
January 2, 2006 | bentfeather/Poets of the Lair

My Dragon Fly and Me

If I could be a Dragon Fly
and wing my way through the sky
I would never be shy
just me and my Dragon Fly!

By moonlight we ride the wind
chase the comets tail for fun
by day we would hide from the sun
our fragile wings would come undone

On darkest nights we would use
fireflies as our guide
we would dip and we would glide
through the heavens open wide
and scatter diamonds in the night sky
my Dragon Fly and me...

And we would wing past our lovers
silent in the night...
to kiss their face in our flight
much to their surprise and delight
my Dragon Fly and me in sight...

Such a view do we share
away up here in the air
of breezes soft through our hair
my Dragon Fly and me a pair...

Oh my goodness, this is fabulous. I know dragonflies are used for bait. UGH, how can that be??

This is the kit you and Spiderboy put together I remember.

Wood

(this is a revision of an earlier poem. I think it is stronger - but I'm not sure if it's finished.

Wood has grain
that tells the carpenter
how to use it,
where to split,
how to hew.
When the carpenter looked at this log,
deciding how to work it,
whether it could be split smooth with wedge or froe,
or needed to be squared by axe,
what would he have done
if he had known who was to use it,
who would carry it down the narrow streets?
Would he have tried to smooth the wood,
finish the edges,
or hands trembling,
been unable to complete the job?

And yet this simple rough beam
shaped plainly like so many others,
became a thing of wonder
more beautiful that the most elegant woodwork,
for it was destined to hold God's gift
for a dying world,
burnished by his own sweat,
stained with his own blood,
polished by his own death,
a work that only the Master Carpenter of them all
could have created

It is a strong poem. I would not say whether or not it is finished, the author knows that.

Eternal Form

Strange to think
the effect of simple wooden beams
just six they were
paired and set to stand
for all time
in the minds and hearts of mankind

Crudely fashioned
yet sturdy made for an odious task
upon two, guilt was hung
upon the last, salvation
and they withstood quake and storm
down through history

That stark image
silhouetted against a storm lit sky
engraved the true meaning of love
and sacrifice
of honor and peace
turning sadness into forgiveness

Thought for the day.

it was the Roman poet Ovid who advised,
"Let your hook be always cast, in the pool where
you least expect it, will be fish."

Today is Wednesday, Feb. 22, the 53rd day of 2006 with 312 to
follow. The moon is waning. The morning stars are Neptune,
Jupiter, Pluto and Venus. The evening stars are Mars, Saturn,
Uranus and Mercury.

On the Road to Jerusalem

And taking the twelve, he said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written of the Son of man by the prophets will be accomplished. For he will be delivered to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon; they will scourge him and kill him, and on the third day he will rise."

But they understood none of these things; this saying was hid from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

Luke 18:31-34

On the Road to Jerusalem

It was a perilous road, sometimes,
the road to Jerusalem,
winding through rough country.

But you were not alone.
About you were your followers,
who warmed themselves next to your holiness,
who thought they knew you after all the miles travelled,
who had heard you speak, learned your message,
and shaping it into what their hearts desired,
they built you into their image of the holy one of God.

How what was to come would shatter this mold they were casting you in,
and give them something more they could not yet comprehend.

They bickered sometimes,
and jockeyed for favor and position,
as humans are always wont to do,
ignoring those deeper truths you told them,
yet patiently you repeated the same lessons over and over.

And now, it was time, the last time you would walk this road,
the last time you would come to this feast,
the beginning.

Did you look at them fondly
as you walked the road to Jerusalem,
this motley crew of friends and followers,
weighing each of their strengths and faults,
how much they had grown,
how much more they would grow.
In the darkness that was to come,
you knew that they would be like steel
heated in the fire of your agony,
plunged into the waters of your death,
and polished by your resurrection.
Forged by God, they would be the blade
to cut through the darkness
to spread your message.

Some would think it folly to expect the world to be changed by such a handful -
Folly, yes - the folly of God, stronger than the wisdom of men..

Night Ride

Long dark road winding around a hidden hill,
leading into a stygian night, without moon or star.
The headlight cuts a tunnel of weak light,
illuminating so little of the world to my sight.
No one and nothing here, not even the lights of a car,
amid the darkness over all, even the air stands still.

The roar of the pipes sings a defiant song into the night,
and I feel a wonder at the moment so totally mine.
There is a freedom to be found in the dark ride,
where dreams and hopes and so many things hide.
I am mesmerized by the blurred middle line,
leading me to someplace with soft burning neon light.

A cold beer and a jukebox grinding out a spirited tune,
folks chattering amid smiles and glances half seen.
whispered words to carry messages in quiet tones,
and I grin at the ways of folks out on the road alone.
I saddle up, with a smile at what might have been,
finding magic that I will explore perhaps all to soon.
