Will "Brokeback Mountain" play in Plano? In the movie's first weekend in the Dallas suburb where the 2004 Mel Gibson film "The Passion of the Christ" earned some of its biggest grosses, the answer appeared to be yes.
After setting a record for the per-theater average for a dramatic movie in limited openings in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, critically acclaimed "Brokeback Mountain" faced its next obstacle as Focus Features expanded the so-called gay cowboy movie to strategically selected smaller cities.
The movie, directed by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two ranch hands who develop an enduring emotional bond, "Brokeback Mountain" took in an additional $2.36 million in its first foray outside those three metropolitan cities, rising to No. 8 at the box office, Focus Features estimated Sunday. Its 10-day total is $3.3 million.
The closely watched debut in Plano, Texas, "was a revelation about the accessibility of this movie," said Focus head of distribution Jack Foley. "This is not gay-dependent. Attendance at those theaters indicates the film has the attention of suburban moviegoers."
It was the first time since Disney's animated "Pocahontas" in 1995 that a movie in fewer than 100 theaters cracked the top 10 box office ranking, according to tracking service Nielsen EDI Inc.

Ya, Romeo and Juliet didn't get married. Their passion was illicit.
Ya, in what version don't Romeo & Juliet get married?
I take it neither of you are Shakespeare scholars. You must have both fallen asleep during the part where Romeo and Juliet are secretly married by Friar Laurence.
>>>Ya, in what version don't Romeo & Juliet get married?<<<
In the gay Hollywood version. It's Romeo and Giulio.
Ah, that explains it.
No, and I am not. But their passion was still illicit, even if they were married, and yes, I missed that scene (was that done before of after intercourse?). It was not to be tolerated. It was beyond the pale.
silly their friends sneak them in to the movies in their trunks.
I prefer "Fudgepack Mountain"
I am certainly not a Shakespeare scholar, but more so I really can only take so much sappy romance (just about none). I was forcibly coerced into seeing Romeo & Juliet and was rather surly about it!
Maybe if they tackled one another and threw some punches during the secret wedding I would've noticed. :)
The usual more people talk about how terrible and immoral a movie is, the more people want to go see it. When will people learn to just ignore a movie like this instead of feeling so impulsively compelled to tell people how terrible it is. Good publicity is good publicity but bad publicity is very good publicity for a movie like this.
Movies live & die by word of mouth.
If BBM was fun or sexy, you'd probably have a some curiosity seekers, but monotonous bordom relieved by moments of utter revulsion will not send droves of heterosexuals to the theater.
Not even King Kong has been able to do that. For passionate illicit love, that's the movie to see.
You're thinking of Plano, Illinois.
Plano, Texas is the home of EDS, Frito-Lay, Dr. Pepper, and JC Penney.
I'll take your word about Tyler.
No problem. It's easy to see where your heart lies.
I'll go for the Tyler roses, myself.

It would be interesting to see a graphic correlating red versus blues congressional districts with 'brokeback' theaters. The graphic could be captioned: Brokeback - Broken Party
Plano is pretty upscale. East plano less so, West Plano very much so. West Plano also has a mega church about rhe size of Texas stadium..and a blue million latch-key kids with unlimited credit cards.
