'Brokeback' finds a welcome in the 'burbs
The Los Angeles Times ^ | December 19, 2005 | R. Kinsey Lowe

Will "Brokeback Mountain" play in Plano? In the movie's first weekend in the Dallas suburb where the 2004 Mel Gibson film "The Passion of the Christ" earned some of its biggest grosses, the answer appeared to be yes.

After setting a record for the per-theater average for a dramatic movie in limited openings in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, critically acclaimed "Brokeback Mountain" faced its next obstacle as Focus Features expanded the so-called gay cowboy movie to strategically selected smaller cities.

The movie, directed by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two ranch hands who develop an enduring emotional bond, "Brokeback Mountain" took in an additional $2.36 million in its first foray outside those three metropolitan cities, rising to No. 8 at the box office, Focus Features estimated Sunday. Its 10-day total is $3.3 million.

The closely watched debut in Plano, Texas, "was a revelation about the accessibility of this movie," said Focus head of distribution Jack Foley. "This is not gay-dependent. Attendance at those theaters indicates the film has the attention of suburban moviegoers."

It was the first time since Disney's animated "Pocahontas" in 1995 that a movie in fewer than 100 theaters cracked the top 10 box office ranking, according to tracking service Nielsen EDI Inc.

"Then porno films must be astoundingly sucessful."

They are, you make money hand over fist (no pun) in that field. Of course, you might go to hell for it, so I'm not sure it's worth it in the long run.

Brokeback Mountain" faced its next obstacle

.....drawing moviegoers to the remaining other 30 or 50 thousand movies houses which are not located in homosexual enclaves.. Come February 1, 2006, Brokeback Mountain will be the highest acclaimed movie within the homosexual community never to have drawn an audience from the heterosexual community sufficient enough to claim a profit.

That explains all the traffic going from Oak Lawn up US-75 to Plano.

Plano is part of the Fort Worth-Dallas metroplex.

Plano isn't exactly all that small either. It's population is 250,000 and is the 8th or 9th largest city in Texas.

If this movie is shown to detainees at 'Gitmo, would it be considered torture? And how would McCain feel about it?

I've personally watched lots of movies at Legacy. It is one of my favorite theaters. Until now, I don't remember ever seeing anybody from the gay community there. If they are there, they sure aren't the flaming flamingos you'd see in Oak Lawn. (San Francisco like part of Dallas for those of you unfamiliar)

Only the investors care if it's a financial success or not. The impication from the article & your comments was that was going to be a popular success since, "Holly cow! It's playing in Plano!"

That's really not even on the table as a possiblity, but, as I said, the media (and you apparently) will attempt to spin it into one.

I figure all the gays who want to see the movie will see it within the first two weeks, then it will die. Reminds me of when Howard Stern's movie came out years ago. All his fans rushed to see it and then it dropped like a rock after that.

If it's a financial success, there will be "more of the same." That's how Hollywood thinks.

The movie got outstanding reviews. My wild guess is that it will pull in 50 million.

Hollywood's thinking -- such as it is -- is a bit more sophisticated than that.

They might sucker some people in with this ad.

"Hey this looks like a nice family film, it's even got that girl from 'The Princess Diaries' in it."

Yes, the three people in America who don't know it's a gay cowboy movie are gonna demand their money back.

>>It is NOT a cowboy movie. These men(?) tend sheep.

Half true... I read the story years ago. While they meet while tending sheep, one is a ranch-hand and the other is a rodeo bull-rider.
