Will "Brokeback Mountain" play in Plano? In the movie's first weekend in the Dallas suburb where the 2004 Mel Gibson film "The Passion of the Christ" earned some of its biggest grosses, the answer appeared to be yes.
After setting a record for the per-theater average for a dramatic movie in limited openings in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, critically acclaimed "Brokeback Mountain" faced its next obstacle as Focus Features expanded the so-called gay cowboy movie to strategically selected smaller cities.
The movie, directed by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two ranch hands who develop an enduring emotional bond, "Brokeback Mountain" took in an additional $2.36 million in its first foray outside those three metropolitan cities, rising to No. 8 at the box office, Focus Features estimated Sunday. Its 10-day total is $3.3 million.
The closely watched debut in Plano, Texas, "was a revelation about the accessibility of this movie," said Focus head of distribution Jack Foley. "This is not gay-dependent. Attendance at those theaters indicates the film has the attention of suburban moviegoers."
It was the first time since Disney's animated "Pocahontas" in 1995 that a movie in fewer than 100 theaters cracked the top 10 box office ranking, according to tracking service Nielsen EDI Inc.

Lots of gays in the DFW area. Enough to buy a full section ad in the Dallas Morning News. This so-called conservative newspaper is very soft on gays.
That depends on how you define success. With a budget of $14 million, it needs to make more than $14 million, total between showings, cable, and DVD sales to be sucessful. If it goes on to make $28 million in combined sales, that's a 100% return, and what I'd call wildly successful.

Troll alert.
It's part of the DFW metroplex with a population of around 1/4 million people. It's one of the more upscale Dallas areas.
Then porno films must be astoundingly sucessful. Darn near zero production cost (ok, a few grand).
It's apparently doing well at the Legacy as well as the Angelika. I'm tempted to drive up there in a little bit and see what kind of crowd comes out of the theater and report back.
The metroplex is seamless. You can drive from Dallas, through Garland, on through Richardson, and up into Plano without ever crossing an undeveloped block of land. The term suburb is actually pretty questionable when you look at it like that. The metroplex is really just one huge city.
Yeah, right everyone FROM Texas is straight, and only Yankee states produce homosexuals. /sarcam off
The Routier Case was in Rowlett, TX. About 15 miles east of Dallas. It is not even in the same county.
Plano was home of the mid 90s "Black-Tar Heroin" epidemic.
Porno is multi-billion dollar a year industry. Successful isn't the word for porn. In terms of monetary success, porn is just golden.
Interesting piece of sarcasm -- but the answer is that the large gay populations in NY, LA, SF come from States like Texas, Alabama, etc.
Very true.
Many of a "certain generation" were quite literally kicked out by their families.
Hey, #1 in that category.
I just saw a commercial for the adventures of Pee Wee Herman part II, coming in a theater near you.
Kenny Bania reviews Brokeback Mountain:
"It's the best, Jerry, the best!"
"It's gold, Jerry, gold!"
Watch this steaming pile win multiple Academy Awards.

This movie has a very small audience. In order to drum up fake numbers, they originally released it to a very small number of theaters. Given the passionate (no pun intended) gay following and the goal for these people to make it a success, they were able to pack these few theaters (which they couldn't have done had the movie immediately been widely distributed). The whole point for this marketing is to then allow the studio to use the useless large per theater number and create the illusion that the movie is successful and attracting a greater audience than the gay audience. Let's see whether they "rope" enough idiots.
The average American does not live in Brenham or small towns. The average American lives in Plano.
