My son had an entire city in his head when he was a short person. Folks moved around on "conveyor belts" (for lack of a better name) and the "belts" knew no limits...anywhere you could think of, that's where they would take you.
Dang...I wish he could have shared it sooner...

"... anywhere you could think of, that's where they would take you." That sorta sounds like this place. We have movie theaters, food shops, ice cream parlors, petting zoos, swimming pools, shooting ranges, archery courts, (no bowling alleys!), shops, farms, labs, factories, astronomy labs, and somewhat magical creatures -- and they are all within walking distance or a short "tube" ride away.
The elevator cars are spherical for a reason. They have to rotate and re-orient within the tube. If you go to an adjacent habitat for a fish dinner, for example, its gravitational field will be rotated by 120 degrees.
With up to ten thousand people in our shared space, only minutes apart, there aren't many limits on activities.

I think that's what Heinlein was describing in "The Number of the Beast." I can't remember if I ever finished that book or not. I didn't like it, and I think it was the last thing by him I even tried to read.

Pat made it through the night with no puddle! In fact, his only puddle of the day occurred when I was in the shower, and the Male Family Members got lazy. (Sigh.)

I found the first half of "The Number of the Beast" to be very entertaining, and the second half to be increasingly confusing, but I would never deny myself a Heinlein.
I've read some really atrocious books, just our of pure cussedness, since I had already paid for it. I suppose the more of Heinlein you have read, the more forgiving you are.
I'll be off to work in a moment, and I'll check in later in the day.
