Heck, I'll take any job on our travels as long as it does not involve a useless activity, such as writing the daily logs.

Thumbing, short for thumbing your nose. Maybe I
just learned more "hick" English than I thought?

We thumb our noses too, though not looking for a lift...

Some of our roads are concrete, and others are asphalt. The concrete block ones go "clickety-clack, clickety-clack" as you drive down the highway.

Ah. Thanks. From the bottom of my bag of dirty tricks, I thank you. I had no clue I had such a following. (NOT!)
Like I said...I'll be either in the library or the observatory. That way, you won't have to worry about whether or not I say something that pinches a nerve.

We don't have concrete roads here, except in some urban areas, sidewalks are sometimes made of tarmac with concrete curbs, but are usually concrete.

Oy, since were on this subject, I'm now thinking of "lift" as
"elevator" & for a split second wondered why you'd thumb
your nose while looking for one anyway (small blonde moment?).
As for doing that while trying to secure a
ride, I don't think you'd get anywhere fast.

Makes about as much sense as what I thought. Now I'm actually
wondering how many strange looks someone would get if they
stood around "thumbin'" like a hitch-hiker near an elevator.

Canopy maintenance is not for the faint of heart!
Just like practice fire drills, the maintenance teams are called to vehicles which ride the girders up across the canopy to get quickly to the scene of a disaster with repair materials.
If a team member loses his footing, and falls toward the ground, he (or she!) needs to activate the backpack wing in order to glide to safety.
This is a bit dicey in a one gee field. I recommend not doing this intentionally until we are in space, where the glides to safety will be safer.
Of course, if you are playing around, and a REAL emergency occurs, your team will be mightily annoyed that you are out of position! (And it's a long walk back to the fence area!)

Hubby has just informed me that we are expecting "two 25-round magazines and an auto-loader". These should come in handy for our Thanksgiving tradition.

Well, lift = elevator and also lift = ride. That's one thing we all have in common with the English language, may it be Standard English, American English, or 'Hiberno-English' - one word can have many meanings.
