First off ... I'm really enjoying this back-and-forth with you.
Now we are in the unenviable position of having that message sent to us by the Chinese, who can now drop virtually anything they want to on our heads.
Anybody who can place things in orbit can do that.
Our adoption of a pacifist space posture will not protect us from their military ambitions. It is vital to the security and peaceable continuation of life on Planet Earth that the United States be THE military behemoth in space, as well as on the oceans and in the skies. I frankly don't trust the Chinese Communists to keep the peace if they gain the upper hand that supremacy in space would provide.
Agreed. And, happily, the military agrees with that, too. Our space assets -- even if they're not directly offensive -- are far too important for us to cede control of space to the bad guys.
"The free flow of oil at market prices" would mean absolutely nothing to our quality of life if the ChiComs could launch ballistic packages from the surface of the Moon. It is absolutely vital that we get there "fustest with the mostest."
This, however, is not an effective means for projecting nuclear power. The difficulties in achieving targeting accuracy alone would make it not worthwhile -- not to mention the huge initial delta-V requirements, finicky in-flight corrections, and limited launch windows.
Plus which, a moon base would be vulnerable -- it wouldn't take a whole lot to take it out: a hail of ball-bearings at orbital velocity would rip it to shreds.
