It's a job that could be a lot of fun - working as a tech for a small mom and pop sort of computer repair place. Should keep me very busy!
But I also have a follow-up interview with another place (to meet the president and such), and an interview for a state position. My head is spinning...
Considering I was in Colorado for eight months and barely got a handful of interviews that went nowhere, I'm not sure *what* to think now!
I asked about neurectomy but I found out it's not an option. It makes laminitis worse and can make the entire hoof slough off, something the vet has seen happen. I've put Tuffy through enough stuff that hasn't worked, I don't think I want to try it.
That's good information. One other thing that worked for my pony George, was a nitro patch. He had foundered and a girlfriend that was an equine science major had a tube of nitroglycerin, so we put nitro patches on the back of his pastern joints. What had taken him months to get over took weeks with those nitro patches. I left them on waaaay longer than you were supposed to but no problems.
Anybody know what the strongest horse pain meds are? This is my thought: stop trying so hard, pull the shoes off Tuffy and just keep him trimmed, keep him on the strongest pain meds available (bute isn't enough) and put him out to pasture, see if mother nature can fix what we haven't been able to. Opinions?
I don't know about pulling his shoes. He probably needs the support right now. I don't want to sound like a cultist or anything, but you might want to check with the Natural Balance/Equine Digit Support System folks and see if there's a farrier in your area that follows their guidelines. I think if anybody can help him, they could.

I'll look that up but right now I don't know what to do. I just went out and checked on him again, he's even worse. He wouldn't even turn around in his stall to get to his feed tub. I gave him 4 grams of bute and 12 cc's banamine IV. What the hell, he's gonna die anyway.
Check out this page. This is where they talk about using the styrofoam block method for treating the acute phase of a laminitic episode and it really makes sense to me. The guy at the seminar said that the lady who initially came up with the idea for this treatment had a horse who had an acute attack and she had no access to a vet or farrier who could help, but she had some leftover styrofoam packing from a TV or something and she made these blocks for him to stand on and it seemed to help his pain and give him the support he needed until the acute phase passed and they could do something else...

No he's not! We gotta think positive here. You just do what you gotta do to get him some relief worry about the rest later.
Tuffy is wearing basically the same thing as the EDSS pad with the rail shoe, which is one of the suggested treatments in Adam's Lameness.
The styrofoam treatment would certainly work for George the cushing's pony so it's good to know. And thanks for the information.
That's what I thought when you were talking about his shoes earlier, but those are recommended for later on in the treatment when the pain is less intense. It sounds like he's having another flair-up, and maybe like you said, they need to come off and try something else like the styrofoam. I don't know, I'm just desperately grasping at straws here. Can you get your farrier? Has your vet given you any recommendations at all? Or do you just need me to shut up and let you think.
NOOOO please don't shut up, I need your support.
My husband called the racetrack vet that has been working on Tuffy, he's coming out this afternoon. They don't normally make house calls but he lives 5 minutes from my house so he doesn't seem to mind coming out. I couldn't get Tuffy into a trailer, anyway. He's going to pull the shoes, you were absolutely right with that suggestion.
My husband was pretty funny on the phone with the vet. He doesn't know much about horses but the vet was trying to explain everything that's going on. My husbands reply was basically, "my wife is hysterical, get out here and fix the friggin' horse!"
LOL!! Good for him! I'd be hysterical too. Hopefully he can help him get some relief. Ask him about the styrofoam block method and see if he's ever heard of it. I'd be interested to know. But he needs SOMETHING soft to stand on I would think. I think the best thing about the styrofoam is that you can carve it out under the most painful part of the foot and get the pressure off while still supporting the rest of the sole. What ever he decides, I'll keep my fingers crossed and you let us know what happens.
Is a support harness to get his feet off the ground something that could help?
How's it going?
Becky
Interesting to hear your suggestions back and forth... Having never dealt with any laminitis, I don't even know what to suggest but I like to file your information away.
My heart just goes out to you though, and to tuffy.
Hello All! In a minute here I am going to post a bunch more pictures!
I'm on my way out for a bit but I look forward to seeing them :~D
I'm leaving tomorrow for Nashville for The Road to the Horse. I'm excited. Really want to just get away from work and not do anything but lay in the hotel room and veg out. I'll post a recap when I return Monday night.
I didn't post them before, did I???
