This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I just got on for a minute because I got a page and had to logon to work and fix something so I thought I'd FReep a bit while I was up.
I was looking at the pic of you shooting and was wondering if that pistol really had something long, black and curved attached to the grip or if it was something in the background. If it's on the gun, what is it? It looks really strange.
It's my carry gun... It's a leather strap attached to the grip that pulls the gun from a concealed place in my carry purse. :~D
Good morning! We've got a busy day today - first we have the husband of a FReeper from the Hobbit Hole coming for coffee on his way somewhere else... then our HHer Rosie arrives from Colorado later on :~D
Huh. I wouldn't mind having one of those straps. Right now I have mine locked up. I've had lots of little ones around lately and had to decide if the risk was greater of them getting to it or needing it to defend myself. They aren't living here now though so I'm fixing to pull it out. I'm also looking for a fast unlocking box to keep by my bed. Right now all the guns are in a case in the living rooom.
Note to self: Never mess with Hair or her purse

Well, I'm going to ride Harley today, for just a little bit. Julia is coming. His back seemed fine yesterday while Chris was here. I'm anxious to see how he/I do in my western again:).

I've got one of those boxes... Seeing as how I don't have kids around, I found the hassle factor a little too high with them. But if you do have kids around, they're a good thing. Mine has a key, but it also has a keyless entry if you move the little feet on it a certain way. That seems like a good idea, if you practice opening it enough to where you can do it quickly. I'm not good at it... I'd still be fidgeting with it 10 minutes after the burglar had killed me.
I don't carry as much as I used to when I worked in the big bad city... but those carry purses are nice... someone unknowing could rummage through my purse and not know there was a gun in there. Real easy and covert ;~D It's nice.
I wish they would sell more things like this. I've gone to several gun shows looking for a "purse". I just come away with just more shooting stuff:')
One of those straps does sound good, especially since I just recently started carrying a purse. We bought pistols about a year ago, I still need to go get my license, I'm a little more anxious to do it now, we had a strange incident happen Fri. night where I carried it with me even tho I didn't have a license, but I didn't conceal it, it was right out in the open.
Remember a while back I told you all about the boy that got lost around here. Well they did find him. NOW we know, he runs a way on a pretty regular basis. He is a foster kid. Well he showed up Sat morning at 1:00AM on our doorstep. He knocked Mack had fell asleep on the couch. He went to the door, and the kid asked for a ride to town. I heard talking and got up and had my gun, and was standing around the corner. He told us a vague story of how he landed up out here (we didn't know he lived around here), It was soooooooo cold that night. like 17. It is a horrible feeling to feel sorry for someone but be scared to death of them at the same time. I'm not sure our judgement was good, but we couldn't send this kid back out in that cold, so even tho we knew his story was a lie and Mack told him that we took him to town and dropped him off where he asked to go. I sat behind him in the truck with my gun in my hand. I don't think he knew I had it, but I didn't conceal it. He seemed very unthreatening. but I just didn't know what else to do.
The next morning we got another recorded phone call from the PD telling about the runaway kid. We called them and gave them a report, they were still out here looking for him. They found him pretty quick after we called. The policeman that took the report is the one that filled us in on who the kid was, and that he and his brother run away on a pretty regular basis.
Of course they asked why we didn't call them. LOL, Mack asked them why they didn't make the foster parents get better control, (bars on windows etc. to keep him from slipping out at night), instead of putting the neighbors in the position they have put us. We just hate getting involved with the police...
Anyway, I've decided it's time to quit putting this off and get my CC. With all the people moving in around here, we are seeing more and more strange stuff going on. Just the other day a boat, like a bass boat size showed up out in the woods stripped. You can see it from the road laying down by the creek. I have no idea how they got it down there...people....really scary.

Julia called and canceled riding today. It's probably for the best. Harley was still so sore last Fri. that altho he seemed OK yesterday, a few more days off probably isn't a bad idea. I'm putting it off till Thur.

Well... I just tried to search for them and found them to be a little scarce even online. They make both purses and fanny packs, which are handy.
Here's my carry purse, and the little hidden pocket that velcros up with only the strap hanging out.
The way mine is designed, if you had concerns, say walking through a parking lot at night, you put your hand through the strap of the gun and walk. If someone bothered you, you can tug and have the gun loose... or... by design, if someone grabs the purse, the purse breaks loose (let them have it) and leaves you holding the gun. That alone is bound to cause some interesting expressions in a mugger. ;~D
Becky, glad your scary situation turned out with you safe... What a tough situation that is... I'd have felt a little obligated to help too... My fear would be if you closed the door on him, he's still on your property and what might he do?

I've thought alot about the incident. Every thing in me was revolting against the idea of taking him to town. But dang, it was the cold that saved him. If it had been warmer, Mack would have told him to hit the road.
The aftermath of it is making me mad too:). Last night my dogs were barking before I went out to feed. They do that, of course, at times, but now I'm a bit spooked to go out there in the dark. I was telling Mack about it this morning, and he told me to turn the lights on out there before it gets dark, then when I go out it won't be dark. I'm pretty sure tonight he'll go with me knowing I'm apprehensive:). But that's what makes me mad, I've been feeding horses after dark here for 18 years, and the only time I've been nervous about it was due to snakes, not people:). I'm sure with time, I'll get over it, but I'd like to make the foster parents of that boy come feed for me:).

Even though I'm right by a store that brings a lot of activity nearby at night... I feel pretty safe walking around because of the perimeter. I have the compound around the house and barn fenced with no-climb or and/or 10 strings of hotwire (and non farm people are pretty respectful of hotwire!) with the padlocked gate across the driveway... yes, someone could climb over it, but only the brave will do that, and they'll feel pretty vulnerable doing it, because the gate is fairly well lit. That stops the casual wanderer... they'll find someplace easier. I'd fence and gate your front!
I did have one guy climb the gate since I've been here. I looked out to see him climb over and fall into a heap inside. He was drunk, and I think he was trying to cut across somehow and thought he was climbing ~out~ of a fence instead of into one. I heard him drop a beer bottle that broke in the driveway. I could see that he was probably just very lost and very drunk.
Gidget, who is very Alfa, was going apes___. I had my handgun in one hand, hidden behind the door, and opened the door with my other hand on her collar. She was barking and lunging like a maniac. I said. GO BACK THE WAY YOU CAME. This is when he muttered something about trying to get home. I said "GO BACK THE WAY YOU CAME OR I LET THE DOG LOOSE." He started climbing back over, and I let the dog loose when it looked like he'd clear it. She raced out there silent and went ROWOWOWOWOWOW! Just as he dropped down the other side. He wasn't sure she'd stop at the gate, and tripped over himself trying to get away.
I realized a couple things that night. One, that Gidget was quite serious and could tell when someone was truly unwelcome... and two, that if I had a real intruder, she'd interfere and perhaps get in the way. That's still something of a concern, that both dogs would be sortof loose cannons bounding around in the way. They need to be considered in the tactical plan ;~D
The concealed carry fanny packs would be real good for you, because you could ride in it too.
That sounds like fun. Maybe we can do that when I come down there for the CPR course.
