This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Yeah antibiotices take a big needle:(. I know Duchess disagreed, but I don't put the whole amount in one site either. I stick twice, which is kind of contradictory. But that much in one site would hurt too, I think.
I learned the scratching method, and since then have never had one even react. I have the shot ready, and just kind of simultanouly stop scratching and stick at the same time.
She may be on to you tho, by now, it might not help. Good luck.
Becky
Because of that very reason for one:)
But a vet also told me that (seems far fetched to me tho), that if the needle breaks in the neck you have gravity to help it work it's self out, in the butt gravity works against you and pulls it in further....and the broken piece has to be cut out...??? I've never had one or seen one break tho, so I don't know how common this problem is.
Just a guess here, and JMO, since you've been using fresh needles to stick with, I'd say she's sore from putting so much meds in one site.
Becky
Going fine! We didn't get much storm, really, though they got it bad all around us :~D
Today I think we're all going up to the beach house for the Super bowl...
Well, we swapped pony and Cyn's stalls last night... Cyn at least ate. Pony's not wiggy... It's a puzzle.
We got a little bit of snow last night, and it's still coming down.
Very cold and windy.
Cindydawg, Biscuit was at the trainers for a 30 days. We have them put the basics on the horse, and will finish her.
Oh, ok. Sounds like you got her home just in time:')
Spending some time with her and not giving her a shot is a good idea. Giving the shot in the rump is a good idea also. Are you making sure the shot comes up to room temps instead of right out of the fridge?
You might also take her favorite treats out for her :)
I was telling Becky I alter her routine but thinking about it in one way I don't. I take her different places and let her graze and stuff but I've been giving it somewhere right before I put her back to the pasture. Last thing . Maybe, I'll give it first today. I draw it up early so it's warm and we go really slow with the medicine. It's the needle, I think. I really don't like giving 10 cc in one site but the alternative is sticking her twice. Usually I just hold her head and show her the treat and give it right after she's stuck so Eddie can push the medicine in.
We changed the routine yesterday but she was already getting fussy. The trainer was there with him but we'll see how she does today back with just the two of us. Also, We have been giving it with the syringe attatched. Friday he couldn't hold on but the needle stayed in. Do you think I should just stick the needle in this time?
Well, glad you came out OK. While haveing breakfast at McDonalds this morning I saw on the TV that Wash. lost power due to storms. I wondered about you. I couldn't hear what they were saying, just read the caption, so I'm not sure what part of Wash. they were talking about.
Maybe just switching the horses around like that will fix the problem. Have you turned the fence back on yet?
Becky
10cc's in one spot isn't too bad. I thought you were giving more.
I tried that one time sticking the needle in then attaching the syringe. It didn't work well for me, altho I know alot of people who do it that way. I had trouble because it moved the needle around and it was hard to get them attached securely without pressing real hard. But it was probably just me:)
Becky
It's cold here today. Probably not as cold as you, but after all the 60 degree days, in the 40's with wind feels really cold:)
Becky
Well, I went out there. SL has really got spooked since Friday. She ran from me in the pasture and did not want to come out or go in the barn and locked the brakes about 4 feet from the barn pole. She came on up but acted like it was gonna get her. I rubbed her down, thumped , and scratched her. She eased up but never relaxed until I put her back out in the pasture.
Wow - do you think just because of the shot or is it the barn or the weather also today?
Interesting question. Eddie just called and said he gave it to her in the pasture yesterday. Friday I had her outside the arena. I've been untieing her and just holding her with a lead rope. He said he tried to give it yesterday and she sat back on him so he tied her up. The wind is howling again and the barn rattling so that might be part of it but she locked those legs when she saw the pole . We'll see how she does this evening. Eddie told me the trainer told him it was just going to get worse before it gets better and we wouldn't be able to catch her. She also doesn't think she needs it though. Anyway, I don't play that game. She can run but not forever:') I was noticing though that her throat is looking really good. Ever since she got sick the 1st time I have always been able to feel her nodes. I can't now.
I think your trainer is wrong - if the vet said 14days, it should be 14days. You want it completely gone, not just better, so go ahead and finish the shots. It's a bummer though that she's in the pasture and can run away.
It sounds like the weather and the barn had her upset yesterday, not the shot.
She just thinks she runs away. I get behind her and she runs the direction I want her to, the holding pen before the exit. I close the 1st gait as I go thru and then it's just a big back yard.
LOL - well that works. Sounds like things went pretty good today.
She just needed her Momma out there:'). Now you know even though I talk to my horses, that I really don't think they understand but just pick up on my tones but I thought you might like this little story today. This morning, I'm following her and I'm telling her stuff " like where are you going? You aren't getting a shot this time". She stopped and looked at me like, "you wouldn't lie about this, would you?". This evening, same thing. I'm telling her "I'm sorry , but it's time for your medicine" She looked at me and snorted and took off. Going to the barn I was telling her, just 7 more days and you are done. A little stick and then I'll give you a bucket of feed and you can graze awhile" She walked right in. Funny ole she mare.
