This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Oh man, sorry to hear about Tuffy's foot problems. The shoeing therapy they used is an accepted therapy for navicular horses. There is a rescue horse with navicular at Legacy that is shod the same way.
Sure hope this does the trick and makes him comfortable. I'll be thinking of you guys. BTW, would you send me an email to my private email? I have probably lost my hard drive along with the past 2 years of data including my email address lists. So, unless we are able to work a miracle today with the new recovery tools we got, I have lost a lot of stuff.
I am having computer problems so probably won't be on line much today. My hard drive has crashed and we are in the process of trying to recover my data. I am using my husband's system to post this.
TTYL!
That's what my teacher, Kelly and her husband, Andy said so I am real happy about that
Onward!
Thanks
I don't remember what your private email is. Can you freepmail it to me?
There are just some things in this world that science and statistics may not support that you just know in your heart is true :')
I'm really sorry to hear about Tuffy. I hope that the shoeing with help him out. Does he have to stay confined to a stall or paddock for any length of time?
We have been lucky so far this year. Every time they predicted a lot of snow, we never got it. Kids went to get Biscuit today. She was suppose to come home tomorrow. She is about an hour North of us, so in case it does get bad, they won't have to deal with bad roads.
I'm afraid we are going to have a very hot summer. We have had hardly any winter.
I must have missed your post. Where is she?
I need some brain storming regarding Sarah Lee, if yall don't mind. The vet ordered PNC twice a day x 7 or once a day x 14. We took the 14 day route since it's hard enough just to get out there every day. She has 8 more to go and has decided she's done. Yesterday I had a little trouble catching her and she really didn't want to leave the pasture but she did. Eddie has been giving them and I've been holding her head. She has been "suffering " graciously thru it but flinching and jumping more each time. I had something on the stove tonight so my husband went out by himself. He said he had a hell of a time catching her and she fought him taking it. I think she is seeing him as causing her "pain". We have been giving it in the neck because my trainer didn't want me giving it in the butt but tomorrow I thought I would go out and get her and the two of us spend some time with her and then put her back and come back later so she doesn't think she's going to get stuck each time. I also thought I would give it tommorrow and pop her in the rump. I just need to be ready to go with her though. Are these good ideas? Anything else that might work or should I just do it and not be concerned about her behavior? I mean it's going to get done, regardless.
Lol. Not sure how to take this (grin). How have you been? I haven't seen you around much. Cold up there?
no it is draging winter or no winter?
hovers around 40-60 degrees!
Just stop by to share my hairball kitty... LOL
Hope you are doing ok
I'm good. Still working and trying to start my own business and horsing around:') I would have expected NY to be cold this time of year.
So would I and I miss it I need cold to know I am alive!:)
What kind of business?
A school. When I get all set up it will be a package. Ged classes- then nurses aide-- then medication aide. I see so many people that want to be a nurse but don't know how. Programs are opening up for aides only to get into LVN programs. I've always wanted to work for myself and do something to help others do what I did. I'll be trying to get them there , one step at a time.
I've heard of this happening before with other people. Can't say I blame the horse either:)
The only thing I know to tell you is how I give shots, and you may already be doing all this. When I give a shot I use one needle the whole time to draw the meds. into the syringe. Then I change that needle to stick the horse and I never use the same needle to stick a horse more then twice. It's amazing what a difference that makes, Using the same needle to often they get really dull and it hurts more.
I also pick the spot I'm giving it in (always the neck, but rotate sides), and I "scratch" the spot with fingersnails or rubber curry comb, hard for about 2-3 minutes before sticking. Desensitizes the spot.
You might just start today, by just grooming her all over for awhile till you can see she is relaxed, then pick your spot, desenstize it then stick with a fresh needle. Maybe changing the routine around will hellp. Like get her out and work her lightly for awhile, get her out and let her graze for awhile before the shot. Take her to different spots to give it, so she doesn't figure out what's coming.
Maybe others have better tips. Good luck. That would be a tough situation to deal with.
Becky
How's it going?
Becky
Thanks. I'm doing most of that except the scratching. We just thump a few times. I'll try the scratching. It's an 18 gg needle and those things do hurt. Even warmed up it's still hard to push. This horse is not a man's horse but has done ok with my husband up to now. Anyway , I'll see how she does with me today. I've seen her get silly with just a little sq needle from the vet, before he even touched her but I haven't had problems with her before with us giving her shots .
Oh, one more question, if you don't mind. Why always the neck for you? I haven't because I didn't want to be behind a mad 1 ton machine:') My trainer had told me she would prefer I stayed with the neck but told Eddie yesterday to go ahead and try the butt since she's probably getting sore.
