The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

True enough... She seems better now I think I'll leave her there tonight. I feel bad for her if that was it.

Yeah. Hurricane season will be here soon. We haven't had much winter. It was very foggy this morning and we were in the 90's today. It was such a nice day until the winds blew thru. We were having gusts in the 30's. The trucks were pushing me over as they passed.

Got a problem, ya'll. Took Tuffy to Lone Star Park yesterday, he's been extremely lame and what my local vet was doing wasn't working. Didn't get good news. He's got 2 big problems, laminitis and navicular. We took x-rays from every which way, blocked the back of his feet to see how he moved, then blocked the entire foot. He didn't go sound until we blocked the entire foot. Can't do a neurectomy on him like we did for Winnie, she was only lame in the back of the foot. Also, Tuffy has no natural cushion in his foot so when the shoer comes out and pares away a bunch of sole, it destroys what little outside cushion he had and that's why he's been so lame after a shoeing. So here's what we did, this is pretty much a last ditch effort: The shoer on site at Lone Star Park put "rail shoes" with pour in pads on Tuffy and the vet injected his coffin joints with Legend. The rail shoes have huge heels on them, they raised his heels 5 degrees which is the highest shoe he had. Tuffy's broken back hoof pastern axis is what's causing 99% of the problems.

Oh man, that's sad:) About like the short in our electric wire we had. It shorted out last Sat in the rain. When I got up Sat morn. it was sparking and even catching fire occasionally. Poor Harley was running around....I don't know how long it had been doing that, but really felt bad for him.

I know nothing about electric, except how to string hot wire, so I may be misunderstanding your post and drawing. But ground wires are not hot. that I know of. I can touch the wire that runs to the ground rod on ours. And we only have one rod. What is the point of 3?

I'm so sorry. Doesn't sound good. I hope the shoes relieve his pain.

Never seems to happen to the ones you hate, does it?

When I was at the track vet clinic yesterday someone brought in a racehorse stallion and he was a NUT. I thought he was gonna kill us all. I asked the vet why he didn't sedate him and he said the racehorse people won't let their horses be sedated. I was glad when Studly left, he was only there for a short time, I was there all afternoon.

Storm hasn't really hit full force yet, it will this morning. So far, just a little gusty.

I'll try to get some pics today, I've never seen this particular shoe before.

I haven't read through the thread, what storm is coming your way?

We've just got a bad winter storm coming with high winds... they say gusts to 90 on the coast (which we couldn't take) and gusts to 60 inland where we are. That's a lot in tall tree country.

I really really love having my big trees, except for about the next 6 hours or so.

Everyone else is still sleeping, I've been up since 4. Just took a bath, figured if we lose power and I'd been sitting up for hours unclean, I'd be really pissed... about to go feed and check on the horses.

High winds would be very scary living under all those humongous trees. Gonna be an exciting day for you, that's for sure. I need to run to the tack store and get some more bell boots. don't want Tuffy pulling those expensive shoes off.

Good Morning.

We are going to be under a winter storm watch today. Been raining all night, and suppose to change to snow. They are predicting up to 8 inches. I did so want to go to the Home and Garden show in Cleveland today. Oh well, maybe next weekend.

Hair, wow hope the storm is not too bad. Is Cyn better this morning?

Gosh Tuffy, sorry to hear about Tuffy's problems. Poor horse.

Cyn's ate breakfast at least, and she's standing quiet, but I wouldn't call her perfectly relaxed. I gave them all some more Quietex this morning, gonna be a stressful day, with branches likely to be hittin' the barn.

Im going along with duchess and thinking that she thinks that there's something wrong with her stall. Is there anyway you can switch them around?

A famous Tb breeder in Italy named Frederico Tesio also believed that something happened during the natural breeding process. He thought that some extra vitality or "fire" if you will was created in the foal through the passion of the breeding act. He was very successful though and bred a very famous racehorse and extremely successful sire named Ribot.

But, on the other hand, quite a few stallions are injured in the act either by falling, or by being kicked by the mare. And it does produce a lot of wear and tear on them.

I think that a stallion living in a pasture situation with a herd of mares is the most natural setting and the one in which the least injury occurs rather than the artificial construct of the production line breeding shed. A stallion in the herd setting knows his mares and they know him. He will only breed when they are ready.

Good job! Learning to post is hard for most people. You must have good natural feel for the horse's rhythm and excellent body awareness to pick it up right away.
