This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Only suggestion I have for Rocky is more fencing! Heavy gauge wire and tight! I subscribe the the idea that more wire is good. They won't push on something with their face, but if they can get their head through it without getting shocked, or lean over it, so they are pushing with their chest, they will power through anything if they want to... Especially if you've got an escape artist who tests it.
Ours has lots of wires, no more than a foot apart, and even closer on the paddock fence, which I built to be especially secure. It's tall, over Bay's head. My method is to keep the wires close enough together that they can't get their head through it, or over it.

I've also been happy with the latest charger I have. Better than the original type, it's a "low impedance" charger, which means it doesn't short out if something touches it. It will power through "wet, overgrown fencing" according to the advertising. And I've seen this to be true. I still keep the grass cut off of it, because I'm sure it sucks power out of it, but it doesn't short out as easily as the old kind did.
Oh - and also good news about Rusty. He's a good heart, and it's really great that he's in a good place. What kind of riding have they done with him? Is he school horse or is she using him on trail?
Good morning all. Well, afternoon now. Just lurking today. Hope all are well. I never watch television since I don't have one but I really enjoy discussions of television programs between posters here on FR, it is much better than watching them! I especially get a buzz out of comments on things like the Academy Awards, etc.
The comments are funnier than any comedy show.
It depends on where you are. Our area was heavily industrial and union and is not doing as well as other nearby areas that are more tech-related and non-union. I think the Huntsville Metro area is one of the fastest growing areas in the country right now with the space and defense contracts and all the associated spin-offs. The Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal, a couple of Boeing facilities and a new Toyota engine assembly plant have really helped them alot. We used to have a Ford plant here but it closed back in the early 80's. The plant I work at used to be owned by Reynolds Aluminum but was sold back in '99 to a private investor group. There used to be 6 Reynolds plants right here, employing several thousand people but by the time of the sale there was only one left which now employs less than 1000. Reynolds as a whole was bought up by Alcoa and exists now only as a brand name. It's a sign of the times I guess.
I like to watch tv news with the mute on.
Oh, the injured one is doing well, all things considered. It's been a couple of weeks now and it's filling in but it's still gonna be a long time before it heals up. I thought I'd probably post a pic once a month so we can compare the befores and afters.
I agree that Rocky's fence line needs more wire. I've been holding off because we are still trying to decide how we want to do it. Mack was talking about getting some more panels to finish off across the front, so that both sides of the gate match.
I also want to get some of this new stuff that a neighbor of Charlies used. It's hot, but it looks like thick white cord. The description in the book says it won't get brittle like the flat tape does. But before I put that up, I want more fence posts down the back from the back of the barn to the back parimeter fence. I'm just trying to keep what I have working till winter when I'll have Mack to help me drive posts. That is the trick around here when fencing, is driving the posts.

She has just rode him around her property. She has like 80 acres, not enough to do what I would call a real trail ride, but her borders think it is:). I think on one of those rides one of her borders rode him.

Rocks make it a challenge, bending t-posts back upright after they snake down through rocks.
I've seen the electric cord stuff, and I like the look of it.

Before I got the DVR and could skip them, I used to watch the commercials with the mute on. Have you ever noticed that you seem to "see" or notice more things with the mute on? I don't know what it is, but I'll notice things in the background more when there's no sound. Maybe my brain is distracted by the sound, or maybe the sound is making me see only what they want me to see, or maybe I'm just weird. Anyways, it's just something I've observed.
If we get the panels for the front then one roll of the cord will be plenty to put up a 3 stand fence down the back, if I can get enough t posts in the ground. Right now the line of fence is at the corner of the barn on Harleys end, which makes Rocky's side a lot bigger. I use to have a line of fence from the other corner of the barn down the back when I had more horses. I had 3 strips of pasture back there. After the kids left I took one down because deer had broke it down anyway.
Most of the fence line down the back is just hooked to trees with insulators. I want to put posts in to make it nice and straight, and I want it from the middle of the barn so that both sides are about the same size.
And by next year I will have a new push weedeater so I can keep the weeds down and the grass will grow back. I want to seed and fertilize back there. It's a mess right now.

My husband does this, bless 'im.
I can tune out commercials, so they don't bother me when they're on.... what bugs me is that he either mutes it and forgets, or uses commercials to surf around the other channels, and I end up missing the first minute or more of the show when it's back on ;~/
mmmmmm push weedeater!
We've had a DVR now for about 2 years, and I just can't bear to watch commercials anymore. We never watch anything live anymore. We record it then watch and fast forward thru the commercials. In fact, I watch alot more TV now then I use to because it's so much better with the DVR. (I'm not real happy about that:)

I get so angry everytime I think of the one I had that got stolen out of my front yard,,,,grinding teeth as we speak. My pastures could really be called pastures when I had that thing. Now they are nothing but a sea of ragweed...

Some of the t-posts on our place had to be set up in a concrete-filled cinder blocks because there was nothing but solid rock in places. It's a pain! Speaking of driving t-posts and pain, I'm extremely leary about doing it now, ever since I knocked a hole in the top of my head with the t-post driver. Duh! It was kinda stupid!
