This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hey Becky, thanks for getting me back over here! I'm embarrassed to say that I never did take that bird in to be tested. Just got busy, I guess. The little paint filly that I bought at the auction is doing great. She's probably going to be a little more high strung than what I like but so far, she hasn't done anything stupid. Tuffy is lame again, we are working on him. The vet originally thought it might be a flair up of laminitis but he took some x-rays, then called and wanted to talk to the farrier about angles. I had a mobile dog groomer come out to the house yesterday to do the dogs, first time I've ever done that. They have self-contained vans, pull into your driveway, plug in to electricity and start cleaning and clipping away. Did a great job, too. It cost a little more than taking the dogs in but it was so convenient I'll probably continue using them.
Hey tuffy:). I wouldn't feel guilty, I wouldn't have done that either. That's why I was interested to see what came up. I've never known anyone to do it.
I was thinking of you last night tho. I watched "Horsemaship Downunder" last night. With Clinton Anderson. Wow. A traniner after my own heart:). I was very very impressed. I think you've talked about him here before too. He is just so much more realistic then the other TV trainers. Very good stuff.
Dandelion that is the reason I'm pinging you. You asked awhile back if any of the TV trainers were any good. I've never been impressed with of any of them really. Last night was the first time I've ever seen this guy and he was great!!!!!! If you don't get RFDTV I'd reccommend you find his videos. My DIL is the one that called me and told me to watch, that I would like him:). She's called about his clinics too, and they are not all that expensive. If you take a horse it has to be 2 and broke to ride. But I think you can sit in the audience too.

Duchess47 - you're right that colt is hairy and skinny... but will be pretty when they get him a little healthier. Is that Speed with him? She's bay.... I thought she was chestnut.

What's happening is, she's getting better and her owner is working really hard to get her (and her sidekick) out of Dodge.
But a vet never came out? Is is definately Strangles again? Do other horses have it?
Clinton knows his stuff. Of all the "TV" trainers, I find that he makes the most sense and has the most effective techniques. If you get the chance, go to one of his clinics. He doesn't hide anything, and he is quite funny and entertaining. There is no "mumbo-jumbo" whispering stuff, just plain practical down-to-earth methods of working with and training horses.
I got to meet him a couple of years ago. He used to buy horses from a ranch down the street from where I boarded and worked (for the dressage trainer). His producer called one day to see if we would allow them to film part of the "Correcting Problems on the Trail" video on our property as we had nice scenic trails. Jake and I are in the video!
Funny thing is that his cameramen are afraid of horses and would not come into the barn or get near the horses during shooting.

What does RFDTV stand for? I want to put in an email request for it.
It is named for the type of mail delivery used years ago to rural areas. RFD stands for "rural free delivery". I think their offices are in Carollton, Texas. It is carried by DISH satellite. I do not think Direct satellite or cable carries though. They have a website: http://www.rfd-tv.com .
It is one of the reasons I chose DISH over Direct.
I take that back! I just checked and Direct now carries RFD. At the time we put in DISH it was only on DISH. It looks like from the website that some cable companies also carry it. The one we have here does not.
I looked it up and sent an email to Comcast... what good it will do, I don't know.
Comcast is our cable company too. There is another horse channel called Horse-TV. None of the providers in my area offer it yet. They have been trying to DISH and Direct to add their channel.
I have sent Comcast several of their letters trying to get them to add it. It would probably be popular around here since there are lots of equestrians.
I really appreciated how he stressed so much that you can love your horse, but when you are working with them, it is work time for them and you need to stay firm.
The lesson I watched was part 2 of a 2 parter:(. My DIL has the first one and I really want to go see it. He was working with a head shy horse. He came so close so many times to just flat out saying the problem with the horse was it's owner:). Anyway, he was working on the ground with it. He had a stick that he used to get responses with, but he also used it to reward the horse with, by rubbing it between his eys. I'd like to see how he got that horse use to the stick.

It isn't hard to get them to work with you and the stick. I have one. It is simply an extension of your arm so you don't have to get so close to reward with a rub and it helps you enforce your space (your hula hoop).
I didn't buy my stick from him, but got it locally for 6 bucks instead of the mega bucks he wants for his.
He never punishes a horse directly. He lets the horse punish himself. That way the horse never associates the problem with the person and soon learns that the person helps him out of his trouble.
I think one of the most important things he stresses is to teach your horse to respect your space. He uses a hula hoop concept to visualize what he is talking about. Your space is the length of that stick all around your body. You can stay out of a lot of trouble with a horse if you do 2 things:
make him respect your space
keep his nose tilted towards you
As Clinton often says, he can outrun any horse that is backing up!
No. I just watched. Friday evening, he worked with a really rank young horse. It got pretty hairy at times, especially when he was working with the rope. But, he stayed calm and let that horse work things out on his own with the rope.
Several people left during that demonstration. Once things calmed down, Clinton turned to the audience and remarked: "Now that we have gotten rid of the tree huggers, let's get on with it!"
He doesn't have much tolerance for people who call their horse "sweetie" and never expect it to behave. He is quite funny when he imitates these people. I am sure you know someone who calls their horse sweetie, feeds it treats all the time, gets pushed around by the horse all the time, and then excuses the behavior, but also is always saying that they just can't understand why their horse doesn't a. walk quietly beside them on the lead, or b. won't load in a trailer sometimes, or c. decides to tank off and take a tour of the property, or d. pushes them around, or e. bites/kicks them.
Anyway, you will enjoy his clinics if you get the chance to go.
