This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
She doesn't act sick . There was definately an opening. Did she get injured? Did she do it herself to breath or because it was bothering her? Is her cold even related to this? The good thing is, the medicine is working. I'm going to see if the vet will come out tomorrow. I'm working with more problems than I feel comfortable with now.
She had strangles last spring. I haven't vaccinated them since because it's a hit and miss with effectiveness. If it is, it's mild and I will vaccinate Okie.
I don't know if she got injured. It very well could be with the scabbing and such. It could be related to the cold, but you've said that she's a bit of a snotty horse, at least that's the impression that I've gotten. Is she running a fever?
Are you at the boarding place, or are you at your own place now?
I'm concerned now about her geting septic. The pills are working but she made need IMs too. There is no way I could get a vet out on the weekend though unless a horse dying and that might even take awhile.
I'm still at the stables. My battery was down on my digital but she doesn't feel warm.
I cleaned the site by the knot and got to skin. I couldn't see anything on her inner jaw though. She either had an opening there too or the stuff just drained and dried there. Sounds more like injury and a cold doesn't it?
Dunno what it is... maybe with pictures?
I'd say an infected injury with a cold, but I would hate to be wrong if it is Strangles... is the vet coming out?
I'm going to try but I will have to take them blind because the camera will have to be under her
I don't mean to be so wishy washy, but it's impossible to say one way or the other without pictures. :-)
I talked with him yesterday and he told me what I was doing was ok and to report in tomorrow.
I don't know if you could even tell with pictures. I'm trying to figure out how she could have got hurt up under there.
Horses can get hurt anywhere on anything. It's a unique talent.
It was fun to explore and I have the pictures ... somewhere.
Thanks Beaker, I believe they are improving, finally. : )
Well what I'm doing is working so she's ok tonight. I just need some direction from the V tomorrow regarding long term treatment. I saw a horse once with an abcessed chest that had to be debided and drained. It took months to heal. I would like to avoid that:')
Something to keep in the back of your mind - check her gums. You want nice pink ones, not pale or white. I'll get out my Vet book and also go pick Bob's brains. Back in a few.
Bob says - strangles, especially if she has difficulty breathing. She most probably never completely licked it last spring.
Now to check the vet manual.
