This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

LOL, I think your're right about that:), except this would me Mack's 3rd childhood:). He went thru one with the Harleys.
Actually, he bought the Vet and the Ranger to resale. He's always wanted his own used car lot, and has decided that is what he is going to do down at the building in one of the rooms. He has told me tho:), that he's going to keep the Vet for a "few" months before selling it:)

LOL! That's the beauty of having your own lot. You get to drive the good ones until you sell them if you want to and they're all tax write-offs. Sweet!
I haven't been riding either in all this warm weather. It makes me so mad at myself, but my boss really wouldn't be partial to the idea of me taking time off to go and ride a horse. I've also been sick, and the past couple of weeks I really couldn't drag myself to the barn.
You know what's sortof unexpected about this unintentional switch to alfalfa? The horses don't like it.
It might. Because some of it was wet I've been checking it pretty closely for mold, but it could be there's a hint of it I can't see. I just think they don't like it, I'm feeding less of it because I think it's too rich for them and still they're wasting a lot of it.

I got a call this AM from a woman in San Diego who has a friend who has this outstanding horse and so she is wanting to buy a horse just like her friends. Her friends horse was sired by P&T's Stone Cold. So she was looking for any other offspring of this sire. She called the Ky Mountain Horse Assoc. and got the names of his 8 offspring. Well, my horse is Stone Cold's Flashback (Waylon) and she was hoping I would sell him.
I told her that he wasn't for sale because he was such an outstanding horse, that I really lucked out with this being my first horse.
Now I know I've got a champ !!!

Hey - that's pretty cool - good for your ego, but don't tell Waylon, wouldn't want it to go to his head. :~D
I usually feed orchard grass. No - I'm out of other hay. What happened is when ecurbh went in to buy 10 bales of orchard grass, they slipped him alfalfa instead and he didn't notice till he got home.
AND - the second bad part is, some of it was wet (I'm sure it was delivered wet off the truck, as rainy as it's been). So I'm taking half of it back as soon as we get a day dry enough for me to get the new stuff home dry.

That's truly odd - I've had horses not eat grass hay but I don't think I've ever had one not eat alfalfa.
I know that his dam was wormed (and actually I think it may have been ivermetrin, it's popular with the folks around here). I know he hasn't been wormed - he's never been handled by anyone but me and my husband these last two weeks. I was concerned about worming while weaning - too stressful? - but if you don't think it's too early (he's entering his third week of weaning) I'd like to worm him before bringing him into our pasture...
I meant to ping you about that post above - I'll get him wormed this week, I think. Can I just add it into his grain? He'll take that, but I'm not sure I could get him to take a tube in the mouth just yet...
I think your right; this may be a job for MEN. As in, not me.
I'm finally able to pat his withers, and we're making real progress, but he's definitely a headstrong little guy. He's not "cornering" me anymore, but he does try to "push" me around. His dam is dominant, and the Half-Arabian gelding the herd runs with thinks he is the stud in these here parts - always nipping and pushing.
I push back, so he's learning. So far, a really loud "NO" accompanied by me stomping my foot and clapping me hands together is enough to make him back down. I make sure I always get in the "last word" too!
For studying it's ok. You need a current one, working. We buy new ones every year.
Horses will completely take over your life. Last night was my turn to babysit. I took my 3 and 5 y/o grandsons to a cafeteria for supper. The baby running around so I put saddled him in a high chair. He started screaming and crying. He was making a scene because he has learned he can get his way. I don't play that game though. I was tempted to take him out caz people were looking but I was thinking no if I do then the little colt is not going to accept that I'm boss. He hushed up though. When I took them to the tables they were being charming. Unfortunately , the place was packed with old farts . You would think I was wearing ecoli the way they looked at me. That's ok. I eat my dessert with my meals so.... You should have seen the "well I never" gasps when I handed the boys ice cream. Next time I really need to take halters and lead ropes, I guess. Maybe a crop too, for that broom Hilda in the bathroom that almost knocked the baby down.
