The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'm amazed your horses will stay in with one strand. The pony would be right over it, or under it. Even Bay, who is pretty easy to keep, got through when I put up a temp strand like that. They might stay in it as long as they had food, but if they wanted something on the other side... pooof.

You've got some serious cool lights... is that your arena area?

And this taught her what, besides to be afraid of tarps? Any idea what the goal was?

That's what so sad about the deal, the punishment in no way fit the crime, she learned nothing from it. The crime was not wanting to unload going backwards.

I know for a fact the guy knew this was a stupid move, but it was one of those things where I think she had tried his patience to much, kind of like the girl in the article the other day. I understand, but I don't understand.

She was pulled over, tied down, and then had a plastic tarp thrown over her and left for awhile

Yeah, I can see where that might make her hate plastic a little bit! <sarc

That's a terrible thing to do to a horse! That's why I always try to associate something good, like a treat, with a scary thing when I'm desensitizing. Doing what they did is just plain mean and is counterproductive.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Like you say, the punishment had nothing to do with the problem. What's a tarp got to do with backing up. I could come closer to understanding it if she had some huge fear of tarps and they were trying to get her over that, but not by tying her up in one fercryinoutloud! I might feed her on one 'til she got used to it but that's about it. Jeez! Some people are idiots!

Well the stand of wire is to low for them to go over, and really to high for them to step over. I wouldn't put just one up if it was the pereimeter, but for cross fencing, especially if you might move it at times. This works fine.

I keep posting before I finish, sorry.

Yeah, those are the arena lights. I thought you'd seen them before. The arena use to go all the way around all of them. They run down both sides.

Is what's amazing is this guy is really a great trainer. I don't know what happened with her. She had alot of other stuff done to her that makes no sense. But I've seen this guy take horses that no one can deal with, and turn them into really nice horses. He always buys the problems because he gets them cheap. He saves alot of horses from going to the killers.

Except for Belle. His dad picked her up at a sale because she looked good. She wasn't broke to ride, the people were just unloading alot of babies they bred and then didn't know what to do with.

I've never understood what happened with her and them. It just doesn't make sense because I know them. That's one reason I bought her. I thought she'd be bomb proof comeing form there. And she was mostly, except for plastic.

The "stand" of wire is to low for them to go "over".

And that's not the only gaff I've made this evening...

I swear I'm not drinking:)

I don't understand why they did that to Belle either. Did they explain the reasoning behind tying her...? the tarp is what really gets me. People do really stupid things sometimes.

BTW - Remember when we thought the drain field had failed last year? and how we had perk holes dug for a new drain field last summer? How the county inspected the perk holes and decided we had a high water table and that the landlord needed to put in a several thousand-dollar fancy engineered system? Well, we let the idea die... I interceded and told the landlord that since we had only had trouble when the drain field was fairly overloaded (washer draining at the same time as a full bathtub) and that we hadn't had trouble since we'd been more careful, they decided to let the whole thing sit for awhile if we were OK with that. I'm more than willing, the county was being ridiculous. Well, after 25 consecutive days of fairly heavy rain, here's the amount of water in the perk hole:

You couldn't fill that hole with water with a hose.

A&P. The fun part of nursing school:') Joshua (my youngest) just finished his 1st semester of nursing school. He's doing clinicals now. He told me today, "I really like this". I helped him do his first careplan today:')

No, I have never talked to the guy about it. I just heard about all this thru the grapevine so to speak. I've never asked him anything, there was no point. What was done was done. I just stopped trying to get her use to plastic.

We all have outbacks - the long black canvas duster. There are straps that you can snap around your legs, a long slit in the back so that there is very little flapping. They are water proof and wind proof so you stay warm in them. We usually wear a flannel shirt under them.

My only complaint would be they are very heavy.
