This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Huh - One of those things you'd think you'd be able to go buy.
BTW... Bay is afraid of people in plastic raincoats. It's the noise ;~D
Belle was afraid of them too.
Becky
He's sure that whatever kills him will be in a plastic bag.
Huh? I don't remember sending you anything. I hope it wasn't anything bad whatever it was.
I started my third A&P Tuesday. Gonna be a fun class.
Is it raining there today?
Becky
Yup. Still. Again. ;~D
Sounds like the Bristol/Johnson City/Kingsport area. VERY pretty! I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya on your house sale.
I've got one of those! It's the kind like the old fisherman on the Gorton's Fish Sticks box is wearing, kinda droopy. It comes down far enough to go over your raincoat collar, so unless you tilt your head down, the rain runs down the back of the raincoat and not your collar. I really like it but it sure is goofy looking. My husband took a picture of me wearing the whole get-up one day when I went out to feed in the rain and I was so embarassed. It was really funny. I think I got it at Wal-Mart.
My head is 22 inches. I know coz I measured it recently when I ordered my new helmet, and 22 inches is the lower range of a medium in a helmet, so I thought it was kinda strange that 22 inches is an XL in this hat, unless it's really made for kids. Strange.
It's in the mid fifties here today too, and PERFECT riding weather. I want to ditch work and skip on over to the barn. It's supposed to rain on the day that I'm scheduled to ride. Go figure...it's been beautiful all week long.
You wanna know how to fix that?
Sure, if you think I should :~D I think it's kinda funny to watch the old man snort. "ohfercryinoutloud. Nothing that should frighten an old A-rab horse" I say ;~D
Well, since you don't ever ride in the rain I don't guess it's an issue, but I occasionally do and I don't wanna end up in the next county when I pull my poncho out of my saddle bag.
I think the funniest thing I ever saw was when one of my riding buddies put his poncho on during a rain storm and the horse was fine while they were standing still but as soon as they took off, the poncho started flapping and it spooked the horse and the more it flapped the faster he ran, and the faster he ran the more it flapped. I've never seen the whites of anybody's eyes get so big in all my life. I don't remember exactly how it ended, but it wasn't bad. No body got hurt.
But I digress. I know you know all this already, but I'd just wear it out there every time I went to feed him, rain or shine. Just stand there quitely until he can stand that, then start to move a little, waving your arms in it, making that little "whiff-whiff" noise that raincoats make, while he eats and do it until he ignores you, then quit. He may not wanna eat at first, but usually the food gets the better of them. It's always worked for me, no matter what I'm trying to get them used to. I didn't think I was ever going to get Grace used to an automatic umbrella but she finally did. She still doesn't like the "Whoomp" sound it makes when it opens, but she doesn't have a heart attack anymore.
He does get over it... he just has this initial reaction to plastic fluttering noises. He spooks at a plastic baggie full of carrots until he realizes it contains carrots. ;~D
The first time I put his own 'rain coat' on, I had to chase him around on the lead line with this big monster in my hands he was sure I was gonna kill him with. But he gets over it. :~D What's really funny too is when I walk out there with a hat on. He doesn't know who I am! - till I talk.
Only time I've been on him that was a little hairy was when we were going to put up signs for that ride. The more I handled the sign to try to get it stapled, the more he was getting all coiled under me. I could have knocked him dead by whispering "BOO" - that was a job made for Cyn LOL.
The other blanketing story that was really funny was the pony. When I got her first blanket I put it on her and she was just frozen. Like she didn't think she could move any more. When she did move, she was in her stall still, and she acted like it was some force pushing her down... she actually tried to fold her legs and cringe out from under it, if you can picture that.
I shooed her out of the stall and when she finally went, she ran and ran and ran trying to buck it off and finally came to terms with it.
The best way I have to get 5 horses to come at a dead run is to take a plastic bag of something out in the pasture and shake it. They've come to understand that all manner of goodies come in plastic bags. And heaven help you if you try to open a peppermint candy within earshot. It's really funny.

That's hysterical about Pony and her blanket. I can just see it. I've gotten the same reaction from the cats when I put a piece of tape on their backs. I shouldn't do that I know, but sometimes I just can't help it. It's just SO funny. The Devil makes me do it.
Here is a historical picture of our state capital building from the lake. This is one of the more photographed locations in town.
A couple years ago, someone decided the trees in front of the capital building were getting too big and were blocking the view of the Capital. So they cut them all down. Scalped it. I thought it looked like hell. And it's been a disaster ever since, the bank, scalped of all vegetation except the little potted shrubs they've tried to plant there, has probably sluffed off 10 feet a year, and is showing no sign of stopping. It's now sliding again from all the rain.
Every year that building gets closer to the bank. Heh... What were they thinkin'?
They weren't thinking, that's the whole problem. Jeez, what a mess! They'll be lucky if they don't have to put down rip-rap and spray the whole hillside with concrete, and won't THAT be pretty!
Just beautiful ;~D
We're having some local flooding of rivers around here... I hate to say say it because of the hardship involved for folks, but I hope it doesn't let up till Saturday when ecurbh and I can go explore and look. I could go today, but who wants to go 'ploring alone?
I tried all that stuff with Belle, and she never did get over it. Hers' wasn't just and inital reaction. She never would tolerate it.
She had good cause to to be afriad:( she was "tarped" one time. It was a bad deal and something I didn't know about till after I had her awhile. I didn't push the issue with her.
Becky
