The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh, I meant to add, that hair pin curve in the first picture would be a blast to be loping around:) I love to get going good and have to make turns in the trails.

I hope to see it in person someday!

That would be cool! But in the absence of that, I'll have to think to take the little video camera thing the next time. I used to take them both, coz my digital is so old that it doesn't do video. I don't know why I didn't pick it up on Sunday. But I don't know that video could convey the scale any better than the stills. I'll just have to try it one time and see I guess.

Girl, if you were lopeing around that curve, you'd better be holding on, coz it's STEEP. But I like to do that kinda thing too on occasion. Back in my wild-and-crazy riding days, we used to take that whole mile-long stretch at a flat-out, wide-open rack. If Tennessee had stumbled, we'd both probably be dead. We did the same on the way back up. With the group I was riding with at the time, it was kind of a race I guess. The old boy had some serious wind in those days. He'd be huffing and puffing by the time we got to the top but he wouldn't let anybody pass him if he could help it. I guess I've mellowed in my old age. We walk it now.

Thanks! We think she is pretty too because we know her personality. I wish I had video to show of her in the traces as she is quite a lovely mover.

Oh, I didn't realize it was steep:(. Well, you could do it from the other direction:) Coming up a hill is easier to stay on, for me anyway, then going down. If it was steep, I probably wouldn't do it.

I 've got one strectch of really good trail that's about 1/2 -3/4 of a mile, it's got some good curves, branches to duck, and 2 really good "turns". One of my favorite places to really get going, but it's nice and level and smooth.

If you look at the first pic, then look at the 2nd, those pics were taken from basically the same vantage point so you can kinda see the degree of elevation change. I just waited for Shirley to get around the bend and into the frame. I shoulda pointed that out in the first place.

We'd love to see one! If you can get your hands on a digital camera that takes video clips, you could download it to your PC and e-mail it to Hair and she could post it for us to see. She's done that several times for me.

More pictures from Christmas of my cat, Spike, who has real attitude (a Viking kitty for sure), and my dog, Jack. Here, Spike is investigating the fire to see if he can play with it:

How Cute! I love kitty pictures. Does Spike have a stubby tail or is it just hidden? I love the one of him standing out of the bag. He looks like he's thinking "What the he// are YOU lookin' at?! Put that camera down and get me some food Slave!".

That's just fine, I'm happy to. There's great benefit to short movies. They say a lot more than a single still, and it's very cool that we've gotten to the point were we can do that :~D

He has a tail. You just can't see it in those photos. I do like stubby tailed cats though. My sister had a Maine coon once.

Good evening,

Had a busy weekend. Met the farrier for shoes and I had mentioned that I would be at the barn at that time and lo and behold had 3 riders saddled and waiting for me to get the shoes finished to go on a trail ride. I live in
MD and Saturday it decided to be winter again and get in the 20's Friday night . It was nippy and I had lost one of my gloves so it took a while for my hands to warm.

Any way I rushed through with a fast brush and tack and away we went. Last weekend I rode and after some cantering and trotting my mare just tired out and was pooped. Very unusual for her to hit the wall even if she is 29, I knew this was odd so I got a salt block sincr I though that might be the problem.

Seems to work because I was out with 2 other TB's and the started off at a canter and trot for the next 15 min. Jumped all the little logs. I hung back since the final rider was not as good and the QH he had was really out of shape. After an hour he went back and then I led through the gun club. Nice trails that are wide and good areas to gallop and move out. My mare knew that we were heading home and picked up a fast canter and easy gallop. She did not want to stop. I had to haul to get her to slow for a walk for the stream crossings. Especially after a series of jumps. We galloped all the way to the power lines and I had a gelding breathing on our backside. I kept having to check my mare from going into a flat run.

Did about 8-10 miles and the last 3-4 miles were quick. Very much different from the week before. Also Rhiannon did not trip and was sound at the trot. She has arthritic knees. She must have been feeling no pain and kept her feet higher.

It was a great ride and the first time in 2 months that she felt so good.

On Sunday, my son and I went to the slopes to try out his new snowboard binding and we had a great time. He learn to snap up his knees and jump the jumps in the small terrain park. It was warmer than Saturday and the snow was very soft.
I really did get my exercise this weekend.

This weather is crazy. The forecast shows a 60% chance of SNOW, now for tomorrow, but it is thundering and lightening like crazy here now.

Glad to hear someone's out riding!

Glad she picked up. Any of us can have an off day, maybe she was unsettled or didn't sleep well that other time. :~D

No rain yet. i was wondering if fires would break out with the lightening....

Really weird. It's really cold too, but the temp for Wed. and Thurs is forecast to be in the 60's.
