The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That's the way our weather has turned. It's not even in the 50's yet here. I'm hoping it will hurry and warm up some before I take off on our ride.

We're working on winterizing this weekend I think.

What do you have to do? Wrap heat tapes on pipes? You said you live in a mobile home, and there is some preparation for winter. The fifth wheel will need the water drained and antifreeze put in too.

I didn't go back to bed. The litter boxes and fish tank needed cleaned. All that fun stuff. A almost complete, water change and scrubbing and it still looks crappy. The gold fish are so dirty. If you look close you can see my algae eater on the bottom. The gold fish are feeder fish that my daughter had in mason jars, for her wedding reception. They are really too big now, for the 30 gallon tank. She won't let me get rid of them thou. I didn't take any pictures of the litter boxes...lol

It's a fund raiser for a girl who lost her hand when it got tangled in a lead rope when the horse spooked. :-(

Oh wow, what a shame. How old is the girl? What happened? Did it break the hand so bad, that it had to be amputated?

There are some pictures on the last thread, of my daughter and her friends team penning. We went camping over Labor day at a guest ranch, and they did a lot of cattle events. I didn't try it, but it sure looked like fun.

Good morning everyone.

It's supposed to be in the 60's here today, with possible rain. Sun is shining right now but I've been in bed with a cold/flu bug since Thurs afternoon. If I can get my brain in gear, I'll do some paperwork today to get horses registered.

Throw the gold fish in the water troughs.

Math. She took it as a sophomore before she had pre Calc and Trig, and thought she could do better.

She's happy with her SAT I scores and her other SAT IIs, so this is just cleanup.

Goldfish are filthy fish. Pound for pound, they produce more $#!+ than a Canada goose.

And those are BIG old common goldfish. Tell your daughter to come clean the tanks!

Throw the gold fish in the water troughs.

lol...The lake would be better. They are really quite pleasant to watch. It's also fun to "landscape" the tank with all the neat things to put in.

So, sorry to hear that you are sick. It's not fun to have that bug, so early. Get out there in the sun and burn it out.

You think like I do :) Sunshine is my cure for just about everything. If it warms up I'll get out, otherwise, spend a good part of the day in a sunny window with the window up for fresh air. That and do laundry with bleach in everything to kill germs :) I really would like to have a clothsline but the dog run is off the laundry room. My queensland would just know I put things up on a line for her to take down.

She's sweating over the college applications right now.

The schools she wants to go to all require multiple essays, and the scholarships she's applying for want MORE essays, so she's very busy.

Poor kid. I don't remember applying to college being this much trouble.

I two Betta fish, and their tank is dirty too.

In the pony drama of the day, when we let them out this morning, she sat for three hours, nonstop, licking the salt lick. We finally took it away. What's up with that?

Sorry you're sick Duchess... I'm just feeling tired and full. We went out to breakfast, had pancakes and eggs, and I think they were made of cement ;~D I haven't wanted to do anything but lay on the couch since.

Do you know what my College Math Instructor told me yesterday? (Course not LOL). Well, a few days ago the school took out all of the podiums. I thought, hmm, that is wierd, but didn't think much of it. Well, the instructor came in for class and complained that he didn't have any room for his computer because he paperwork covers the little tiny desk that they give the instructors to use. He said that next quarter, there won't even be a table for the instructors to use! I was like, "What? How come?" He said that there is a movement going on with the education establishment that says that the students should be more "owning" of the classroom. They believe that the teacher should be "closer" to the students and not be standing there over us. You know, pretty soon they will be asking us, what do you want to learn? Sheesh, it's no wonder kids are not learning anything!!!

She might be trying to replace salt lost sweating in her being cast drama of a couple of days ago. I have never known a horse to lick too much salt, although periodically they lick the salt and/or mineral blocks a lot more than usual.

Forgot to add, hope you're not catching something too. :)

Hopefully this bout with whatever it is will immunize me for the rest of the winter to all the people coming in and coughing all over me at work.

No. I don't pen my Arab.

But I am going to try my Thoroughbred today. My buddy has a Quarter horse for me if I need it.

No doubt I will be the only one there today with a Thoroughbred.

But if anybody gives me any chit about it, I will show up next time with my neighbor's Tennessee Walker or maybe our Shetland Pony. : )

I'm not catching anything, just fatigue.... I been busy lately, and civilization wears me out. ;~D

As'n for that pony.... it bothered me that it was goin' on for hours, like it was a compulsive thing, and I just wanted to break the cycle. All the horses look utterly bored and it's so dreary out. Once we took the salt block away they wandered out into the back forty, where she'll undoubtedly find something else to get into that she shouldn't ;~D

I'll give it back to her later. I've never heard them to OD on salt either, but I wanted her to take a break. ;~D

Now THAT is weird!

She's applying to very conservative, Southern schools, and also to Princeton, just because I went there, but I don't think she really wants to go there and I don't think it's the right school for her. It was liberal when I was there 30 years ago, but still tolerant of other views. From what I understand now, it's totally intolerant of anything but the left lib/rad party line.

But I don't think we'll be seeing any of that neo-pedagogical nonsense around schools like Washington & Lee, Davidson, or Wake Forest. We've attended classes at all of them and they are pretty straight-shooting profs - either your typical podium lecture mode or round table discussion in the smaller classes. (LOL when you write back and tell me you're at W&L - which appears to be the most conservative school I ever saw!)
