The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good Friday morning to you all!

Frog, check out the link on post 2917 for those turn out sheets. My daughter works at that tack shop.

Is that you standing there?...

No, that's my 6' tall, 250+ lb riding buddy.

This on has me in it, squatting under that same rock, taken from a slightly different angle...

To me, your rocks are just so out of scale! It looks like you've been shrunk down and put in a big fish tank habitat.

LOL - good morning.

LOL! It does kinda look that way doesn't it. You just can't really comprehend the sheer size of that overhang from a picture. The clif that it's under is well over 100' high, and the shelter underneath it is quite deep. A whole village of people could get under there in a rain storm and not get wet. When I come up on one of these, I always wonder if it was ever used by Native Americans. It kinda revs up the imagination, ya know.

It looks like a blast to explore around in. I'd like to see that. I never imagined stuff like that in Alabama, I thought you were green hills and black dirt and I didn't picture huge rocks.

It's unlike anything here, even in the mountains. We have huge mountains made of granite, but they aren't in the form of mega boulders that look like they've been arranged in a fish tank with caverns under them! Do you know how they came to be?

Now this is just my theory, but most of the cliffs in this particular area are made of sandstone or limestone, so they're pretty soft, unlike your granite. They get water percolating down through them over time and when it freezes, these big chunks flake off, or maybe in the rare instances when we've had an earthquake they fall off. I assume that most of these shelters were formed long ago, because none of the bolders look like they've broken off in recent history. Most of 'em have trees and moss and stuff growing on top of 'em that looks like it's been there forever. Kinda like these...

Wow, I would never have guessed looking at the first picture that a person could fit in that space where you are in the 2nd picctures.

Some of them look like they were heaved out of the ground... whether it happened fast or slow, like the rocks that surface at Becky's place, only bigger. But those big rocks with the big caves under them... They look like they've been tossed there... or maybe they were once surrounded by earth but the softer dirt has been eroded away.

Anyway, I love seeing them, and you take great pictures of them.

That's what I can't get over, the complete lack of proportion. :~D

Yeah, when we're crawling around on those big rocks that are up under those shelters we always laugh and joke that we sure do hope none of those big pieces of the ceiling decides to fall off right then, coz you can look up and see the places where some of these rocks on the ground have come from. We'd get squashed like a bug on a windshield. ;o)

That's why I always try to put people in my pictures. They give you some crude means of measurement. Knowing that my riding buddy is 6' tall, you can visually take his length and start laying him end to end next to some of these rocks to get a rough idea of how tall they are. It boggles the mind.
