The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

In the places where no one has tried to clear it just naturally stays open like out back. It's funny tho that where you cut down trees to clear you get spalings by the thousands out of every stump. We learned it's easier to just leave the trees alone:). Along the sides of the road where they bulldozed for the road and water lines the trees and undergrowth are very thick, once you get past that tho the woods stay nice and clear. I have trimmed branches that grow low on the trunks on the trees out back. We've never kept cows anywhere but in the arena. We don't have the fence for them. The area out the new doors is where I burned the grass last spring and posted the pictures of it.

... I know that look too!..

Yeah, I saw that look from the dog that killed my cat a few weeks before he did it. My nephew and his little 2yr old boy like to drive their gator down to our place on Sunday mornings and have breakfast with us and the dog follows him. He's a black Lab and he'd stand at our glass storm door looking in at the cats and his eyes would just get nearly solid black and he'd have his ears all pulled up on top of his head and he'd alternately pant really fast, then hold his breath and get real still, except for a barely detectable trembling, almost like a junkie needing a fix. My cats stay in at night and whenever we're home but get to go out during the day while I'm at work. He'd chased the cats before but had never managed to catch one of them because I'd always been there when he did it to head him off. But this time our nephew came down to fix our mailbox one day while I was at work and the cat didn't have a chance. My nephew tried to stop it but his little boy was trying to get in there to "help" and they both almost got bit in the process. I can't believe he's still got the dog because I'm afraid that one of these days he's gonna bite his little boy if push comes to shove. In the mean time, the dog better not show back up at my house coz he's a dead dog if he gets after one of my cats again.

Too bad... I wouldn't want to witness that and I'm sorry you did.

Really though, the dog's natural desire is to catch little prey, and I wouldn't expect a lab that might chase and kill a cat would be a danger to any people or kids, unless you've seen other signs that he is.

Sometimes we can fight nature, and sometimes we fail at it. Mine are pretty good... Gidget is almost acting more maternal than predatory, she looks at them very intently, but she licks them in the 'let mom inspect your ears and butts' kind of way when they let her. When the kittens suddenly appear and rip across the room though, that triggers a very primal response to chase! They'll be better the bigger the kittens get and I'm being as careful as can be.

This morning I let them play with the dogs in the room at first, which means the kittens feel a little intimidated and spend most of their time under the recliner and under the saddle rack.

Then I put the dogs out so the kittens could really rip for a while, and they did. :~D

Heh... These guys really crack me up.

They wore themselves out and I put them back in the crate to sleep it off. I'm supposed to be working :~D

Oh I didn't, and I'm sure glad I didn't coz I would've been a basket case, AFTER I killed the dog of course. I didn't even want my nephew to tell me anything about it, more than he already did. My concern about the dog biting his kid was because of a comment he made while telling me about the attack. He said that he tried to get the cat away from the dog while he was mauling it and that the dog growled and snapped at him. I know it was the heat of the battle for the dog, and I love dogs too, but that just didn't sound good to me. I never had a dog that you couldn't take anything away from, even right out of their mouths, at any time, without so much as a cross look. It just scares me.

On a lighter note, I sure love the kittie pics. There's nothing like the sight of cats playing to lighten the mood and make you laugh. And it's nearly impossible to get anything done when they're around, especially work. They usually want to be laying right in the middle of what ever it is you're trying to do.

It's a bad scene.... I hope he doesn't bring the dog again, and I hope you and your nephew can get through this... I know I'd feel awful if my dog did that to someone else's pet.

You probably aren't in the mood for a dog vs. cat story, but I do have a funny one where the cat won. I heard a cat fight outside, and my cat, and a neighbor cat were in the heat of a nasty, screeching fur-flying fight. I opened the door, and my little cocker mix, Zulu, keen on the sound of it, bolted right out between my feet and headed for the noise.

As she approached at full speed, barking, the cats broke up, mine took off, and the neighbor cat just hackled up and froze facing this oncoming dog.

The funny part was watching Zulu come to grips with the idea that she didn't have a plan for this possibility... she thought the cats would ~run~. Zulu started putting on the brakes, and she looked like a cartoon animal, her little legs spinning out in reverse. She didn't stop in time and that cat jumped on her and she started screaming. I was still laughing when I arrived and managed to get the cat to hiss off. And Zulu actually ended up having to go to the vet for a scratched lens. But I'll never forget the skidding-legs-running-backward this-doesn't-look-right-I-better-Stoooooppp imagery!

Yeah, I got past it. I never said anything to him about it again after he told me and all I said then was "Oh MAN! That was my favorite cat!". He's a good kid and does an awful lot for us and I wouldn't want to hurt his feelings. I'm sure he knows not to bring the dog back with him though. All he's got to do is come in the truck. The dog doesn't follow him then.

I loved the dog vs cat story. I can just see it too. A cat that won't back down is a force to be reconed with by any dog, much less a little one. I'm glad the little cuss got off with just a scratch to the eye coz that cat could've really done a number on her. I'll bet the cat was thinking "What the heck IS this yappy little thing running at me, a rat tangled up in a mop or what?!" ;o)

Glad you got past it with your nephew... it's rough.

As for Zulu, she had to wear an Elizabethan collar for the scratched eye, and she was pretty pathetic. She kept getting stuck under things like the coffee table, or the dining room chairs, and she couldn't get out. I'd just find her, despondent, in these predicaments.

Those collars are really funny looking but they sure do work. A co-worker of mine had to put one one one of her Aussies when she got in a fight with one of her other Aussies and got a bad bite on the back. She kept pulling the stitches out so into the collar she went.

You know I told you about Dalton and his horse R.L. earlier on and how R.L. got a really bad cut on his head and they thought he was going to die. Well you can't exactly put a collar on a horse, well you can, they make a wooden cradle for their necks, but that doesn't keep them from rubbing their wound on stuff. So Dalton had to crosstie R.L. in his stall for about 3 months. He kept rubbing his head and busting it open again. Dalton even had to 3-way cross tie him because with just 2 he could somehow hook his neck around and scratch his wound on the chains. Poor thing. But he didn't hold it against Dalton and really seems to love him. I guess he knew that Dalton was just trying to help him.

Tear Alert

Silent Night

It was dark in the barn at the end of the day. Beside his proud dam a newborn foal lay.

The mare she stood and bowed down her head, the foal tried to listen to the words that she said.

Her words were too soft for his small ears to hear, He struggled to his feet and she drew him near.

"Mama, I am not sleepy, I want to have fun. I want to run with the others and lay in the sun."

"Hush, little one, this is the time that we pray, for those who suffer at the end of the day."

"Dear Lord, we are thankful for all we receive, the world's not as hard a place as we once believed.

No longer must we hunger, shiver or thirst, our needs are now met, our ills are now nursed.

But there are too many horses, unfortunate still, who survive every day, through force of sheer will.

They never are petted, pampered or brushed, Have never had a human in which they could trust.

No blankets, no turnouts, no time just for play, and Lord how they suffer at the end of the day."

"No child to whisper soft words in their ear, no owner that comforts when they know fear.

No soft hands to pet them on neck and on back, good food and warm shelters not all that they lack.

They get no attention when they are not well, locked in their stalls filled with filth, they already know Hell.

Often beaten and starved they hang down their head, to wait sweet release that only comes when they're dead.

They get no soft bedding on which to lay, little food and no love at the end of the day."

The foal's eyes they widened with fear and concern. The mare nuzzled him gently and licked him in turn.

"My son, do not worry, you'll never know hunger. You're days will be secure and filled up with wonder.

Not long ago I was one of those suffering, deeply in pain, no kindness, no soft words, no shelter from rain.

Before you were born our rescuers arrived, and I knew when you came that you'd surely thrive.

Sleep now, my child, our Angels are near," softly she neighed, "and know we truly are thankful at the end of the day!".

The owner of my stable brings in these horses nobody wants. She says she thinks who of her students might want them when she buys them. She told me that when she saw Sarah Lee she thought of me. I think that's cool (as long as she quarentines them now). It's amazing to watch how scrawny and wary horses turn into plump, well cared for and happy animals.

Good Morning....

REMEMBER TO VOTE TODAY!

School, library, senior services, retarded children...new levies. They're killing me with taxes. 5 State issues on the ballot and new touch voting machines. It's going to take a while to vote.
