The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well good, he doesn't have as many pressure points as I though then. Hopefully the saddler will have him fixed up with his latest pad creation. That's cool that you have him. I don't know what I'd do if I had that kind of problem, other than get another saddle. We don't have anybody like that around here.

There isn't an off the shelf saddle that can fit that back, you can see in the top pic what a bowl Bay's back is. I'm glad to have him too. He's an old time saddle maker too, so he can build them from scratch, if I had that kind of money...

Yeah, I don't think Bob's knee will have hair on it since they had to cut off that huge flap of skin. I don't think hair folicles come back in scar tissue that big, but I'll hope for it anyways.

I hope the scarring is as minimal as possible too, on such a pretty and young horse with so much potential. But I think regardless, his dark black legs will help make it less visible than if he were any other color.

Well, you could just shave his other knee too, and say it's a fashion.

I went out and took another pic of Bay's back... This shows the pressure points a little more clearly. I guess he has a few grey hairs right on his wither too, but I don't think those are anything... He's got a few misc grey hairs all over. Do you think?

Hello there! I'm hoping y'all can help me.

I'm participating in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which starts November 1st (next week!) and will end November 30th with a 50,000-word novel.

My novel is set in Apache Springs, a small West Texas town with ranches around it --- if you know West Texas, think of a bigger Alpine in Fort Davis' location with some of Marfa's flavor. Tourism is a big part of the local economy, as is the dog racetrack on the edge of town. In my outline, I have described the local vet this way:

"Dr. Bondurant certainly appeared successful. He owned a small-animal clinic, including a boarding kennel and a grooming parlor, in Apache Springs proper, usually staffed by students from Big Bend State University, and a large-animal clinic on his property outside town. The large-animal clinic, set on a twenty-acre lot, also featured a half-dozen grassy paddocks, a large kennel, and a surgery chock-full of state-of-the-art equipment."

Hair mentioned a hoist for sedated horses, and stocks. Is this setup too big, not big enough, missing something?

Thanks in advance, gentlebeings!

Wow! He really skinned it didn't he! I can see why your vet told you to leave it open to the air. At least Bob left the flesh on his knee.

It will heal up fine and I don't think there will be a very noticeable scar on Bob. Since he is graying out like Henkell, eventually it won't be noticeable at all. My vet said that Henkell will eventually have about a 1-3 centimeter white line that will over time fade into his graying coat.

Just remember that the before photo is about a month after the injury. I didn't get any photos of bare bone. We used a treatment made of foal placentas to jumpstart the granulation tissue. It really worked well.

Forgive me for coming in late to the conversation.

Do you know how these injuries happened?

Hey ALL - see post from my friend Rose above. Rose is writing a novel, and wants a believable vet in her story.

I told some things about how large animal vets really live in FRMail, mostly that I didn't know any vet with as much facility as she describes, that they do most of their work right on the farm where the horse lives, but I wondered if you all wanted to tell a few vet stories she can use to have a better idea about what a horse vet practice looks like.

Aren't those something?

And ShakeNJake's gelding hurt himself over a year ago I think, and it's still healing. Big wounds like that take a long time to heal up.

Yes I do. He was turned out with some other horses. They got into a turf battle. Henkell is usually very respectful of fences but forgot how close he was and kicked out and through the fence. He got his left hind hung over one strand and just torn off all the flesh trying to get free. It was a metal post and cable fence. The cable is not good for horses as it is a stranded steel cable attached via high tension. He must have done it late in the evening and wasn't found until the next morning. He was quite shocky due to pain and loss of blood. The barn manager didn't think he was going to make it.

Fortunately, the hock and the associated tendons and ligaments escaped injury.

Over a year? Dangme!

Do you ride him yet, ShakeNJake? I noticed in the pictures above that he moves willingly.

I started working him again in August. I mostly lunge but ride him a couple of times a week. Movement is just as it was, but his left hind in particular is weak. Nothing that work and conditioning won't fix. His action is perfectly normal, which I am SO thankful for since his lovely suspension is a major reason I bought him! He just floats along.
