This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
More people should do dressage with their horses. It keeps them supple, balanced and going strong, and helps hunter/jumpers to be better balanced over fences because they learn how to carry themselves properly. The horses at my trainers barn are very fit, and stay very sound.
I used to do a modified hunter clip on my horse too. Like Bay, his face was horrible looking when clipped, light and dark all over. I he was sitting on the cross ties, and someone asked who the funny looking horse was!
Yes they do but I do it anyway when they start shedding in the spring, just to get that old long hair off of there. It evens out when the rest of it turns loose. But I wouldn't do it any other time. I made the mistake of clipping Hope later on in the spring and she had those clipper marks forever! I'm not the best barber in the world.
If you don't want the dog, contact a poodle rescue in north Texas. Maybe they can assist you in placing it in another home.

Clipping is a really tough art, one that I've never been particularly good at either.
Oh man, I am really starting to feel like I'm catching cold. Sore throat, sleepy but unable to sleep, and chilled.
I think I got it from Becky.
Oh no, honey. Shall I pick up some Theraflu for you on my way home? Or anything else you want?
Okey-doke.
I should probably go get some hay this evening too... the forecast says showers the rest of the week.
And we are low... you can fit at least three in the little truck if all that frap wasn't in there.
Well, take care of yourself.
We may get down in the 40's tonight. I haven't pulled the blankets out but brought the horses in. This 90 one day and 50 the next isn't good.
Whatever it is I've got seemed to come on real slow. I thought it was allergies from being out in the areana stirring up all that dust moving panels.
The chicken soup and aspirin seemed to have help tho. I actually found some good old fashioned aspirin that has caffeine in it. Bayer for body aches and pains. I'm feeling alot better right now. Now if it will just last.
Becky
I did :) thanks.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do about blanketing.....Both my horses coats have thickened up, but they're not really growing long. I'm not sure what to do about Harley. It could be pretty cool at the ride. I would probably think it would be good to blanket him there. After all the excerise thure the day then having to stand tied all thru the night with no shelter like he has here, he could get stiff???? So should I be blanketing him now at night??? What's you all's opinion. Other then tonight the night's are being forecast in the mid to upper 40's.
Becky
Mine don't have winter coats yet. The barn comfortable and I don't want them to get too hot. If it gets in the lower 40's I'll go put them on though.

Even if he's not normally blanketed, I'd think it wouldn't hurt to do it at the ride. He'll be out in whatever elements are there, and keeping him warm will help him at least not waste any energy staying warm if it's chilly out. Keeping his muscles warm will help keep him looser in the morning, too, I'd think.
Can't hurt.
We don't blanket our horses here unless we get freezing rain/sleet and below freezing temps, then we only blanket horses who don't have shelter.
HOWEVER, we blanket to trailer them and unless the weather is nice, we blanket after an endurance ride.
Ok, thanks, that's pretty much what I thought i would do. Just blanket hiim there.
I will put it on and off him a few times here. I have the kind of blanket that goes over his head, no buckleing across the chest. It can take a bit of getting use to altho I don't think he will mind after the inital time.
Becky
It's funny, Bay will turn to voluntarily stick his head through his blanket now.... but the first time I ever blanketed him, he pulled back and ran around like I was trying to throw a tiger on him. ~shakes head~
