The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Looks very fall-like there! I bet in winter all the trees are bare, it'd be interesting to see that because it looks so different from here. We have leafy trees like Alder and Maples, but they aren't the predominant sight. They disappear among the evergreens in winter.

The thing that's really different about your rides is how far you can see. If we stood at the top of a hill, unless we are riding in a recently logged area, we can't see off of it. :~D

Hi, yes I am in general biology. I took A&P last semester, that was a breeze. This one class is messing with me though. It's a combination of me and the instructor. Thank you for the offer to help. I'll look you up when I'm needing help again. Good luck in micro.

Well, they really aren't all that exciting of pictures:)

This is at the bottom of the steep climb. It's not that steep here, but about 1/2 way up it really gets steeper and there are big flat rocks on the surface that make it scary, wondering if the horse will slip, but they never have so I guess I should stop worrying about it after all these years:). It was a real trick holding myself up out of the saddle, while holding the reins and taking pictures:)

This spot is where I rolled off Belle one time coming down this hill. It was when she was pregnant with Dot and I had taken my back cinch off. She was heading down at a really sharp angle, but still bent down to try and get a bite. I think with the pressure that put on the breast collar it caused the back of the saddle to raise up and tipped me right off. I just did a slow somersault over her head. I laid there laughing it was such a funny fall. But I did hit the horn....ouch....had a horrible black bruise.

We are still climbing here. You can see the rocks.

This is now from the west side of the creek looking back at the east side where I was earlier. That line of shadow down the hill is where I took those other pictures from.

Here I have made the turn back to the north and am riding along the top of the ridge above the creek on the west side.

Ok that's it for now. I've got to go run some earrands. I'll post some more when I get back if you all aren't bored of looking at Harley's ears:)

If FR running slow for you all?

Becky

It is looking like fall, but sure doesn't feel like it. It is still very hot here. When winter really gets here the landscape does look very drab.

About seeing far, our trees here are just not as magnificent as yours. Nothing really except scrub oak and hickory. The really red leaves you see is sumac, but they don't get very big.

Yeah - FR very slow, it's not just you. :~D

The rocks at the top of that climb do look slippery, I think I'd always say "watch your feet" on that spot.

Funny fall story on Belle.... did it happen fast or really slow?

I've got to go now too, grab some breakfast and head to town for errands of my own I put off yesterday. Post all the pics you want, I'll be back later!

The steepness of climbs and descents never really shows up well in pictures, I try to show that too in some of my pics, and it never really shows what it was like, it looks flat. So I can appreciate what the pics ~don't~ show on those.

Good pics Becky! We're starting to get a little color around here too but it's been so dry that the leaves will probably just fall off before it gets very colorful. FR has been really slow for me too. I was getting ready to reboot my PC to see if that was the problem when you said something, so you saved me the trouble. Thanks!

I think the differences in the terrain we ride in are cool. Someday, I'd like to see yours in person, and I'd sure love to show you mine! I'd even borrow Tiff's QH so you'd feel at home :~D Becky's seems really open to me, but I bet it would feel closed-in to Duchess!

But just for ShakeNJake's benefit, here's the view from the top of our hills... just a peek through the trees:

Course... we do have our share of open ground too, in the areas that have recently been logged.

We need some pictures of your riding spots ShakeNJake!

Just lovely. My dad's family is from the Rocky Mount, Va, area. So, all the trees and the mountains look familiar to me.

We are flat as a pancake around me. Some areas have rolling ground though.

If I can get Jake's front left shoe back on him before Saturday, I will be going on a trail ride at Lake Ray Roberts near Denton. I'll take some photos if I go. Jake pulled off his shoe the other day during our extended trot across the diagonal. It was my fault. I let him drop that left shoulder and his right hind pulled it off cleanly.

I'll try to get some photos of my "riding arena" out back today. Better check the batteries on that camera ...

Hey I figured out what my noxious weed was! Somebody suggested that I Google invasive weeds in Alabama and I found it there. It's not Bullnettle, it called Spiny Amaranth or Spiny Pigweed. It looks like this...

Nasty stuff!

If I got the HTML right, this should show a photo of Henkell when he was 3 years old:

You got it right! He's beautiful! He's TB right? We'd love to add you and your horses to our who's who page... there's a number of updates waiting for my husband to have time for.

I've got to go into town now on errands, I look forward to the rest of your pics when I get back.

He is gray. He looked like a brillo pad then. He has lightened up a lot and is now 7 years old. He is a fantastic horse.

He is a Trakehner which is a Polish breed. They were originally bred as all purpose farm horses and cavalry horses. As cavalry horses, they were used for dressage and eventing. They are very tough horses. The breed was nearly wiped out during WWII by Hitler's armies. I'll try to find the link to the breed history as their toughness is what allowed the breed to survive WWII. I imported him from Canada. He grew up outside in those Canadian winters in Manitoba. So, he thinks our winters here are summer. He doesn't seem to have a problem with the summer heat either.

I've seen Trakehners before and they're very pretty. From what I remeber of them, they're a long, lean, lanky horse that looks like they'd be very good at endurance type events where lots of stamina is required.

If you go to my profile page and scroll about half way down, I got a 2yr old filly that's about that same color right now as Henkell was in the picture. It's hard to tell it in the picture though coz it was taken in the late evening sun and she looks red. She's a Racking Horse and her name's Grace. I kinda got a thing for gray horses. ;o)

I love your horse Tennessee! I have an 18 year old QH named Jake. His name is my nick on Free Republic. Your filly is gorgeous. Henkell is my first gray. I am partial to bays which is what Jake is: This is an old picture from 5 years ago or so. I am not at the barn that is shown in the picture anymore. Here we are at the Dallas Dressage Club's Fall 2003 show:

Beautiful fall color! We don't get much here in Texas. Except for Lost Maples canyon.

Nice looking horse. I would have thought a TB too, but I've heard of the breed you say he is (can't spell it:).

Hair, funny you should say my trails look open. When I first posted pictures on the NES Thread everyone was surprised whe had trees and hills. They all thought OK was just flat and open. It seemed very wooded to them:)

Frog, that is a nasty looking weed. I've made note of what everyone has said here about building pastures. Sounds like the first thing I should do is spray for weeds. Then sow.

Becky
