This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
That is a good link:) did you watch any of the video clips? did you notice that in the picture the horse is carrying her back pack:), they showed that on some clip I saw on TV. I thought that funny/cute.
Becky
I think that is the area he mentioned. I'll take a picture when we pick it up and send it to you.
LOL...I only was watching that morning show because I was looking for a local weather report and just happen to catch the interview. Well I need to go get started on my fencing. It's supose to get near 90 here today, I'd like to get done before it gets that hot, and then maybe get a ride in. I've really slacked off this week, I haven't rode since last Thurs. and my ride is fast approaching. I just wanted to get this done once I thought about it.
Becky
Yeah - watched the first trailer.... looks like a movie that will make me cry :~D
Well, at least ~you're~ in shape. :~D
Hey Man! Glad to hear from ya!
Hey girl, I am just catching up on the news about Tuffy. Glad to hear he is recovering.
I am not at Legacy with my horses anymore. They are at my house now. Henkell's leg is nearly all healed up and I am riding him again.
Maybe we can meet for a trail ride sometime at Lake Ray Roberts. I still keep in touch with my friends at Legacy. A couple of them are big trail riders so maybe we can all get together. You would like them both. They are good people.
Anyway, glad to hear Tuffy is recovering nicely and hopefully you will be back to riding him soon.
Have ya thought about using those Dees that were meant for the stirrups to hang reqular western billet straps on? It looks like once you get those stirrup straps off of there that you could put a doubled off billet on the far side, then put a 5 or 6 foot long billet strap on the near side. Then buckle the girth on the far side and loop and tie it on the near side. The girth strap on the far side may even be long enough to use without putting the western off billet on there. Just an off the wall idea...
Well hey, stranger! Good to hear from you. How's school going? Hectic, I bet.
Yes, I can meet you sometime. Tuffy is chugging right along and is getting antsy about having to stay in a small round pen. I've been getting one of my kids or my husband to drive our golf cart while I sit in back and lead Tuffy up and down the pasture, to burn off some of his energy. We just walk but if he breaks into a trot there's no limp.
I knew you left Legacy but didn't know you were keeping your horses at your house. Sure beats boarding, huh? I like being able to watch them out the window.
No, that's a great idea! I'll try it today. If it works out I'll just cut off the straps that were supposed to hold a girth. Wonder how hard it is to cut through leather? Guess I'll find out if this works.
The best thing I've found to cut stuff like that is one of those "Handy Cut" shears from Sears. It's got a flat jaw on one side and a long razor blade on the other. It works great on rope and hose pipe and stuff like that but if you don't have one then use something like a box cutter with a pointed razor blade. It may take a couple of passes but it'll cut it if you lay it on a board or something.
The little loop handle thing might be a good place to tie stuff, maybe a pommel bag or a rain coat.
My husband may have that or something like it in his tool box, I'll have to ask him. He's got so much junk in there, there's bound to be something.
That is a good idea but I'm not brave enough to use that pad out on the trails. I'd never get back on if I fell off or needed to sneak out in the bushes to whiz. I'm too old and fat to swing up anymore.
I just went out to my tack room to see if I had any latigos or billets that I'm not using. I found one good, supple latigo but the only billet not being used looks like mouses have been nibbling on it. It also has tons of mold. It's soaking in a butter tub full of saddle oil now but I may have to get another one. (it's not hard to talk me into a trip to the tack store)
Oops, last post from Deaconjim was me! I havent been on here for so long that I forgot to change over. : ) More coffee needed!
I love waking up and looking out my bedroom window at my guys. It is a bit restrictive because I have to feed at appropriate times, but I love having them here. If I have to go out of town, there is a stable down the street that will board them for me at a daily rate.
I have my dressage arena all marked off out back. It is just grass but it doesn't cost me $450 a month per horse either! One of these days, I will add a real arena.
Keep going with the golf cart exercise for Tuffy. Maybe he will get skinny enough for that really nice bareback pad to fit around him!
State Line Tack's online catalog shows a girth extendor for english-style girths that adds up to 8". I also ran a search on Ebay and got several hits for auctions on the same type of product, leather girth extension. Look at item #7189286489. I have purchased tack from the vendor, Green River Tack, before and have been very pleased with the quality of the products.
Thank you, pretty happy to hear from you too. Came back Friday afternoon and been here at home since Sunday. I am running in granny low gear for the time being and sleep is very elusive. Finally got a couple hours this am and it was glorious.
Thinning my horse and cat herds way back ... how many would you be a needin today........... : )
Sharn, we know it's you even when you're signed on as Deaconjim. Your accent comes through even when typed. ;o) Good to hear from you. I love going through old junk like that. You can find some real treasures. You gonna have a yard sale?
Oh no you don't. I got enough already, of both varieties. You getting rid of Suzie and the Boyz?
