Looking for advice on a gun for self defense in the case of roaming gangs of looters.
personal notes | Sep 2, 2005 | putupjob

I see from New Orleans that when the social order breaks down, we are responsible for our own defense. I am planning on getting a firearm with the correct training that will be stashed away in a crawl space, never to be used unless a dire situation arises. The scum looters can come for me, that's fine, but I am going out in a blaze of glory.

I am seeking advice on what I should get. A handgun, a rifle? I'm sure there are big time gunners on freep and I could use some solid advice. Thanks.

A shotgun loaded with buck shot....preferable a riot model pump...can put mor projectiles downrange in a shorter period of time than any other weapon. That is according to my SWAT trained adult son, who uses one of those for his own self defense weapon.

Remington 870 Shotgun.

It's all you'll ever need.

You'll get a million opinions now. Brace yourself.

The best home defense firearm is a 12 gauge pump shotgun. Remington 870 is commonly available and at a reasonable price. No reason to get one with a long barrel either. A 20-inch barrel is plenty.

If you are serious do it legally and get the concealed carry permit and what ever gun feels right in your hand and has stopping power... .380 is the lowest caliber, but if you don't have good aim or are not famillar with guns learn how to shoot one properly first or you are more of a danger then the looters are.

A shotgun. Just cycle the thing and most people think twice. Twelve ga. pump goes a long way for home protection. A 357 revolver is also the ticket. Do not use any semi auto's as they can jam.

If you shoot them outside.......drag the body inside. Learned that from a cop.....

A shotgun would be a good choice but, whatever weapon you chose, you need to maintain proficiency and the weapon itself. Keeping it in the crawl space does neither. In general, however, you do have the right idea - be prepared to protect yourself.

Ditto that. I love my model 1300. Kicks like a mule with 3-inch mags, though.

I'd recommend a stand-off weapon as well. Scoped Remington BDL in .300 win mag.

Agreed, 12 gauge loaded with Buck Shot is the ticket..Winchester makes a home protection model, think it's called the Defender and comes with short barrel.

I trust my life to a Colt 1911 .45 cal pistol. What are the two most intimidating sounds in the world? A pump shotgun being racked and the slide of a .45 pulled back and released.

Agreed the Reming ton 870 is the best for home defence. I'd suggest the 870 Marine Magnum version 18" barrel and 7 shot capacity.
A 9mm or .45 Glock would be ok for a back up weapon.

In the pants is the prefered method. ;)

Shotguns are nice that is true, but I do love my 1911... :)

I would never suggest doing that. Forensics now-a-days is quite advanced that they can figure out what you’ve done.

You are about to get a ton of opinions and also some nonsense.

For home self defense, nothing beats a folding stock, short barreled shotgun.

You don't have to aim it, just point and anything in front of you will die. Don't keep it in the crawl space or attic.
Just secure it.

When and if you ever do go to a gunship, they will concur.
Or course you can get a bunch of handguns that are smaller and concealable, but you are talking about looters, right?
