Yeah... it's just a bad situation waiting to get worse.
Makes me think of a few disaster movies or alien-invasion novels... it's all there, the idiocy of officials, people waiting until too late, the last refuge that's going to go horribly wrong...
Eewwwwww!
...major landmark being blown away...
When Mayor Nagin was talking about what folks should bring with them to the shelters, he specifically mentioned NO WEAPONS. SirKit and I had a big laugh about that. He said it reminded him of Gimli being stopped at the doors of the Golden Hall and being made to give up all his various axes, knives, etc.
It is a good warning in NO, though. It can be a brutal place.
My guess is the former, unfortunately.
Yeah, me too. The whole "goodness of humanity" thing is seriously overrated and when we're talking about being trapped in a dark, half-flooded building with thousands of other people, no food, no water, no working toilets - it's gonna be Lord of the Flies time.
Isn't cable internet great? Have been watching streaming TV from NO all day!
I hadn't thought of htat book in ages. Good analogy.
They're going to HAVE to bring in porta-potties. When the city floods, the sewer system is gonna go off-line. The city should already be bringing in supplies to all of the shelters. I believe FEMA has already started working with the State and the city.
Yeah, now we can stay up to the minute about storms a thousand miles away. I'm not sure that's an unmixed blessing...
But at least I know to fill up the tank before church today.
Suzi, I'd believe that if I'd seen one sign that these people know what they're doing. They don't, they screwed this one up big time. It's going to be horrible when the storm hits, but the real disaster will be three to five days later...
We're going to see all sorts of pleasant disease outbreaks. Dysentary, for sure...
The problem is that tomorrow I'll have to find streaming audio or visual that the firewall doesn't block. :(
On the hurricane thread they were talking about having to fight off the snakes and the rats for the high ground....and the rafts of floating fireants...
*shudder*
That's just a horrible thought...people surviving the actual storm only to face poisonous snakes. But apparently it's happened before.
Ugh.... this is why I will never live somewhere that gets hurricanes. I hope. And if I do, as soon as I see one pointed at me I'm in Nebraska.
...and run straight into a tornado! :D
I'm pretty safe from tornados here, at least. And earthquakes. Just gotta worry about the occasional forest fire.
Done.
The local newsguy at the Superdome said they were doing weapons checks before letting people in.
When is it supposed to hit?
