Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

The original PC had an 8088 processor; they replaced it with the 8086 in the PC-XT. The PC-AT had the 80286 processor and originally ran at 6 MHz. The 286 was eventually cranked up to 20 Mhz.
To: RMDupree
It's the CPU's of old... The first real IBM PC ran the 8086 processor, which didn't last long, and was replaced by the 8088 which they got rather more mileage out of. It went more or less like this: (I fergit the 'zact years. Summa those are kinda foggy fer me.)
8086 (late 70's, early 80's)
8088 (mid 80's)
80286 (late 80's)
80386 (early 90's)
80486 (mid 90's)
Pentium (mid 90's)
Pentium II (late 90's
Pentium III, IV... blah blah blah...
Now the 4Ghz P4 is pushing more than a thousand times as fast as those early 8088's.
Amazing.

Oops... I thought the 8086 was first...? Not so?

Nawp, the 8088 was first... Rose looked it up on Wikipedia.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Ack. Google is my friend. The 8086 was first, but it was used in a Micron computer, not in the IBM PC. The IBM PC used the 8088 first, then the 80286 was a redesign of the 8086 processor, not the 8088. Makes sense.
The stuff I don't know continues to amaze me every day. Or... the stuff I *think* I know but don't have quite right.
Yikes.

The last haircut and perm I got was at Fantastic Sams. It was about $25 cheaper than my usual place, and it looked great!
I'd had trouble getting an appointment before my trip to MS in June, and had a couple of hours before my cousin could pick me up, so I took a cab to Fantastic Sam's, got my hair done, and had her come get me at the there. Worked out perfect.

Is that part of Sam's Club or does the place just happen to have "Sam" in the name?

I can't imagine what speeds will be achieved by the time I have grandchildren. It'll be astounding. Stuff we can't even imagine yet. Twelve years ago most people hadn't even heard of the Internet.

Well... that still puts you well ahead of the curve. :-)
I was still running a corporate BBS until sometime in 96 or so. Searchlight BBS software. I remember it like it was last night's nightmare. Yikes. BBS's. [shiver]
