The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ah.... I was wondering, since this is about Christmas decor, if it might be from "Christmas Vacation".

They didn't see the problem when they did the root canal. In fact it ~may~ not have been cracked at that point. Oral surgeon had a hard time figuring it out as well.

It flared up a few months back when I was eating dinner. Got the sharp "ice pick" kind of pain. Regular dentist thought that it was just that the bite needed to be adjusted, which he did and that helped.

But the problem is still there.

The good news is that, even though he doesn't think it was anything he did, regular dentist is going to give me partial credit toward the work on the implant. That's fair, considering the billing issues we had before.

Yep. Tooth with a root canal job cracked down in the root. Pulled tooth, replaced with implant and crown. Oh yes, and another tooth needed a crown....and another tooth needed an inlay. And then there were a couple of fillings that needed to be done.

I'm all caught up on my dental expenditures.

Back! I think it went pretty well, except that they gave me a "test" by giving me a bunch of info to put into an Excel spreadsheet to sort in a particular way and total. It wasn't completely straight-forward, but I didn't dare ask questions like I woulda if it had been real (the instructions were slightly cryptic). And knowing it was a test, my brain locked up..."Excel? What's this? And what is that arrow thingie on the...whatever that magic light box is called?" *sigh* And though I know how to do totals without a problem, I didn't get around to figuring out how to add a column where 1 = $1500 and 2 = $2500. All stuff I could figure out on my own given a tiny bit of time, but I didn't have that. Gahg.

However, on the positive side...after I was done the gal there said the other person they'd interviewed didn't know what Excel was, so maybe I did better than I think.

In any case, they're making a decision by the end of the week, if all goes well. And they said I'd be notified regardless.

All right, so at least you won't be waiting long. And Excel skills are less common than you'd think!

No navigation problems?

It wasn't hard to find. And I was actually quite a bit early...glad I didn't take the earlier bus.

I think I could do the job. It doesn't make me all warm and happy inside just to think about it...but I'd get paid. And *that* makes me all warm and happy inside. ;-)

And it's one you can walk away from when you get something better. Pay is good. Getting to ride the bus to work is good, too.

We think there are three candidates, right?

Three candidates, yep. They interview the third on Thursday.

Well, then. Maybe that person also doesn't know Excel. You weren't quized about that when you took the original test?

The one catch - if it is a catch - is that if they offer me this job, I pretty much have to take it. If I don't, my name is removed from the admin assistant pool.

If I'm just not offered the position, I'll go back in the pool and be called up next time there's an opening, which will be...pretty much immediately, if there isn't already one.

To: RosieCotton

But you want to take it because you do need a job, so that's not really a catch.

It is good news that you go back into the pool!

The test was a written, multiple-choice test of basic clerical skillz, mostly. Like spelling, proofreading...and the wackier questions I've referred to before.

The actual positions vary pretty widely. Some might use Excel heavily...some might be mostly just data entry in a unique-to-the-office position. Some might be mostly scheduling or other secretarial type work. I guess that's why they didn't get overly specific with the test.

Ah, true!

If you get this job, will you have money for "other things" now and then?

Heh...depending on the price of the "other things", certainly.

I'd be able to afford music and books and clothes...maybe a computer eventually.
